Front Differential Dipstick

Are there supposed to be any o-rings on the front differential dipstick? I just changed the fluid, and the dipstick fits pretty loosely in there...

Yes, there's an o-ring on it. I replaced mine a couple months ago.

Re: Front Differential Dipstick

thanks! Was it at the top, or down about a third of the way?

Re: Front Differential Dipstick

It should be at the top. It is similar to the oil dipstick. :)

Re: Front Differential Dipstick

I figured it out. The o-ring is actually about 2 inches down from the top on mine. The old one was so petrified, I thought it was part of the plastic part that holds the o-ring in. I cut it out with an x-acto knife and put a new one in...tight as a drum...

Re: Front Differential Dipstick

Great! They do get very hard and don't look like an O-ring anymore. :D

Just get an assortment. I picked up an nice assortment (144 o-rings) at Autozone for $7, individual o-rings are like $1.99 each...

Re: Front Differential Dipstick

Good idea. I've only seen them sold individually at my local hardware.

I work at a hardware place I'll pop my dipstick out and find the right size when I am work.

My thoughts exactly....

I thought our differentials were more "maintenance free" (like my Chevy's)..... What's the recommended change interval?

Inspect every 30K miles, replace at 30K in dusty conditions...
http://www.subaru-svx.net/photos/files/How-To/25365.pdf

I replace mine every ~60K miles...

And BTW, I now have a dry engine, no drips on the floor since I replaced that dipstick o-ring which seems to be the last thing leaking...:D

Re: Front Differential Dipstick

The parts diagram on Subaru Parts lists the o-ring as 13.8x1.9 p/n 806913060. Anybody able to translate? O-ring usually have three dimensions. Thanks. Bill Z
