safe in 3rd?

My 92 svx doesn't want to shift into 4th gear when i have it in drive...
my question is ... i really need to take the car on the highway for a 3 hr drive.. the car seems to run well at 60 mph in 3rd gear..the rpm aren't much above 3000..is this ok? or will i really kill my car?
thanks

I'm no gear-head mechanic guy, but does it ever shift to 4th in
Drive? I drive around town in 3, and when i get on the highway
and pass 55-60 MPH, i push the Shift Lever forward into Drive.
But as far as what it'll do, it'd probably create some excess heat
in the Automatic Transmission. As long as you dont go too fast
and take a few rest stops for your car, make sure fluid levels are
good, you shouldnt have an exploded Transmission...

But then I also could be seriously WRONG and you mess
your car up real bad. So in conclusion, just ignore what I just
said above.. Would hate for you to mess your SVX up.

Good luck, hope you get some solid posts.

thanks rc

i have NOT tried to switch it into gear at that rate of speed...it could really damage it ...the car runs just fine in r, 1, 2 and 3 just not drive...seems to have difficulty switching into 4th...i talked to a mechanic today and when i get time i will put it in the shop for the 2-3 k rebuilt..ouch!

I would recommend getting the transmission fixed before taking it on a long drive like that. What happens if you lose 3rd gear when you're 3 hours from home?

I know someone who lost all but 1st and 2nd, and killed their engine because they drove it too fast in the lower gear and a very long way to get home. :(
