What did you see wrong on your steering rack?

steph 12-29-2007 09:45 PM

the guy i had look at it said it was leaking out of the boot.

Was the engine running when he checked it?
Did he turn the wheel while it was running?

If yes on both counts I have a rack that I can sell you.

Sorry to flog an old, mouldering, dead horse carcass, but I am now also in need of a rack (I think).

We pulled the boots off my rack to change the inner tie rods, and it was noted that fluid was pissing out the boot. Why do you ask if the car was running and the wheel was being turned?

Because alot of the time the power steering leaks are not actually the rack.
As in Steph's case it was one of the hard metal lines that was actually leaking.
So if the car is running then there is pressure, (usually) and if the wheel is being turned then the pressurized fluid is being pumped through the rack.
So, if it is peeing out then, (a constant unstopping stream)
then, you probably need a rack rebuild, or rack.

Well, I don't know about a stream, but it was dripping pretty good from under the boots.

Do you happen to have a spare rack?

Yes.:)
I'll send a pm.
