Climate Control Issues
 

Hello. I have a 1994 SVX L, FWD. For the first few thousand miles, it's been great, however, right about when fall began, my Climate Control started acting weird.

First the fan would cut off then turn back on, and now I have no fan at all. About a week ago the fan turned on full blast when I turned the Climate Control back on on a whim, but quickly shut off itself.

I have run the diagnostics on the Climate Control ,and am getting no error codes (or 13, sun sensor, when they're not ample sunlight.) The interesting thing is, when I cycle from 85°F, to 75°F, and finally to 65°F, there is a mechanical clicking of what I believe are the air mix doors moving. It doesn't matter what I place the fans on, Low, Medium or High, nothing comes out. Genuinely stumped, any help would be appreciated.

On my (Black) 1992 LS, I've got some Climate control issues as well. Although I think I have a damaged mixer door, it's tricky to tell. If you've not already tried, see if "Def" makes a different. Try every setting in both AC/cooling and heating.

For me:
- heat won't come out of the main vents
- AC/cold will come out fine on any vents/settings
- heat will come out in Def (out of the window defroster vents

Living in California, just having heat coming out the Def vents if good enough for me, so I've left it as is. But checking those conditions may help you advance you diagnoses.

I believe it is normal operation in the SVX for the heat to only come out from the floor vents.


As for the original post, I would first suggest testing the fan and voltage going to it. I found a post about cleaning out the fan motor, it maybe worth a try.

For the clicking, there is are vent motors on each side of the heater core that push the vent doors into different positions, sometimes they get stuck you may need to clean an oil the tracks.

I got the AC working on my "new" (Pearl) SVX, heat does appear to be coming out of the upper vents on it. On my other (Black) SVX, heat comes out for 2 seconds then there a "shooowut" sound as some vent closes and then nothing at all comes out of the upper vents.

I've heard this is due to something melting in the mixer or something (and a get an error code pointing to the mixer door or something like that). If you get no heat out of the top vents, it might be worth checking the diagnostics.

Hot air should only come out of the front vents when the climate control is in the VENT position. From the FSM.



OFF Mode

1. With OFF switch in off position, control panel LED and temperature display should go off.
2. Airflow should stop.
3. Air outlet should be in heat position.
4. Air inlet should be in fresh air position.
5. Compressor should be off.

AUTO Mode (Temperature set at 65°F)

1. With AUTO switch in ON position, AUTO switch LED and temperature display should be on.
2. Outlet air should be cool and coming from front vents.
3. Airflow should be high and automatically controlled.
4. Inlet air and compressor are automatically-controlled.

AUTO Mode (Temperature gradually changed from 65°F to 85°F)

1. AUTO switch LED should be on. Outlet air should change from cool to hot.
2. Outlet air should move from front vents to bi-level to heater vents.
3. Airflow and inlet air are automatically-controlled.
4. Compressor is off.

AUTO Mode (Temperature set at 85°F)

1. AUTO switch LED should be on.
2. Outlet air should be hot and coming from heater vents.
3. Airflow should be high and automatically-controlled.
4. Inlet air is fresh and automatically controlled.
5. Compressor is automatically-controlled.

ECON Mode (Temperature set between 65°F and 85°F)

1. With ECON switch in on position, ECON switch LED and temperature display should be on.
2. Air temperature, airflow and outlet air location are automatically controlled.
3. Inlet air is fresh and compressor is off.

DEF (Defrost) Mode (Temperature set between 65°F and 85°F)

1. With defrost switch in on position, DEF switch LED and temperature display should be on.
2. Air temperature and airflow are automatically controlled. Inlet air is fresh, and compressor is off.
3. Outlet air should come from defrost vents.

VENT Mode

1. With VENT switch in on position, VENT switch LED should be on. Temperature display should go off.
2. In-vehicle air temperature should be the same as outside temperature.
3. Airflow should be fixed at medium speed. Inlet air is fresh and compressor is off.
4. Outlet air should come from front vents.

CIRC (Recirculated Air) Mode

1. With CIRC switch in on position, CIRC switch LED should be on.
2. Inlet air is set to recirculated position for 10 minutes, then inlet air door will move to fresh position.
3. CIRC LED will go off

OUT-TEMP (Outside Temperature) Display Function

1. With OUT-TEMP switch in on position, ambient temperature flashes on temperature display panel.
2. Set temperature reappears on temperature display panel after a few seconds.
