How do I program new remotes?

I need advice programming a set of new remotes. My SVX came with one worn key and no remotes. Does anyone know where to get accurate programming instructions for new remotes? I cannot find this anywhere in the service manuals-just info on reprogramming existing remotes. I followed some instructions I found on SVX world and after repeated trys I can get the horn to beep three times and security module to click away, but pushing the button twice on each remote doesn't program the remotes? Sometimes when pushing the remote button, the horn will beep, sometimes it will not. These are factory remotes and came supplied with batteries. I'm assuming they are fresh. Does anyone in the SVX ether have suggestions, short of a trip to the dealer?

Have you checked the How-To Documents? Here is a link to the security folder that gives you all kinds of info. :) Welcome to the site and if you have more trouble, let us know. :)

Thanks for the site reference. However, I tried exactly what was posted and got no where. Although the remotes are factory new and came installed with the stacked batteries, I probably need to see if they are fresh or not. Another question I have is where to get an SVX tool kit (pouch, lug wrench, wheel chocks and hand tools)? I've tried recyclers, ebay, and other such sites to no avail. Thanks again.

I would post what you need in the Wanted/For Sale Forum and maybe someone has it. Good luck. :)

Here is another doc that is from the factory -- Link is Here Good luck. :)

Thanks again. I appreciate the assistance. If I ever get the remotes programmed, I will post the resolution.

I'm not sure whether the remotes in the US are the same as in Europe.

When I bought mine, no remotes came with the car, so I bought a new original remote from Subaru (horribly expensive). My mechanic trained the car's electronincs to the new remote. For this you need open a side-cover underneath the dashboard. Amongst the huge amout of wires there is one with a connector that is usally disconnected. When you connect it and use the remote, your car's electronics will remember this remote key as legitimate.

Don't forget to disconnect the wire again, or any suitable infrared remote will open your car.

You also have to keep in mind it is an infrared remote, like for a TV set - so it only works if the beam is directed at the receiver - the little hole in the door handle.

Open left or right cover? That depends on the model year of your car.

I did not know this. The US version is not infrared.

Thank you Radar. I will post a follow up when I find a solution.

ruffyone 11-21-2005 01:42 PM

The solution is contained in the SOA publication, "An Introduction To Keyless Entry And Theft Deterrent Systems" Video Reference Booklet. The SVX theft deterrent system was upgraded subsequent to the 92 1/2 model, and retrofitted free for all customers whose SVX's had the original theft deterrent system--order number SAO386R601 consisting of a new security module and a new security system switch. This unit has a permanent memory, and only requires programming for new remotes. To do so, turn the security system switch off. Insert the key and turn it on and off twice, leaving the key in the ignition. Immediately begin pressing the security switch button on and off rapidly untill the horn beeps.(this may take many, many times). You should also hear the security module clicking (it is behind the glove box for models with one airbag). Once the horn beeps, immediately push the button on each remote, twice. The horn will also beep each time the button is pressed to indicate the transmitter frequency was recorded. After programming the second key, cycle the iginition switch on and off to exit the programming mode (this may have to be done twice to effectively exit). That should do it. If not, try again. Still no luck, then read on.

My tech said that not using the keyless entry feature for an extended period of time, may result in the need to replace the module. You'll know this if the lock/unlock feature does not work after audible evidence that the new remotes were effectively programmed (i.e. the horn beeped during the programming process); or, if the lock/unlock feature is slow to function (i.e. you have to push and hold the remote button for an inordinately long time before the lock/unlock feature operates). Also, the front wheel drive SVX and SVX models with two air bags, had different security modules, so please refer to the noted publication for specific details related to those models. Good luck.

I have bought an 1996 SVX here in the netherlands (europe) and it has
the infrared remote system. I have searched the web for the program
instructions for these remotes but unfortunatly unsuccesfull. I have allready
found the sidepanel ( I THINK!!) for the cable that you should connect, BUT I can't find the unconnected cable...could you PLEASE make a photograph or explain to me really well wich cables you are talking about and where they are.. i'm desperate..:)

loads of thanks

Welcome to the site. Hope you get your problem fixed. :D

Eureka!

I have found a way to program those annoying IR remotes :D.
Itwas indeed two loose connectors in the dash, then putting the key in the contact and turning to ON. using every remote several times, then starting the engine, take out the key and disconnecting the wires again. :D
i will be posting some pictures of my yellow SVX lsi in some time...they've told me it's a really rare colour..

merry christmas to everybody!!!

To anyone still having issues... make sure you do not have an L model because they do not have a security system...
