SVX seeker seeks advice

I have only owned older generation subarus, EA82 series 4wds, and now mine eyes have been opened to the real world, the Subaru SVX. I have just recently begun researching this Knight in shining armour. Having discovered the bad points: premature transmission failure, rotors, and wheel bearings (not beefy enough), I find myself with the opportunity to buy one locally. It's a 92 LSi (VIN x85), with a brand new transmission installed, and it has 111k miles. It has the dark green ext. with grey int, the paint still shines (no fading), but the leather seats are worn, and I have not seen any 92's as of yet, with seats that aren't worn (no rips or tears, just your typical cracking). Asking price is at $4200, it has been offered to me for $2500. After test driving it, I determined it will need new rotors, at least, and the tires will need to be replaced. What should I offer for this car, is $2500 too much, and if so, would $2000 be a good offer considering the work that I would have to have done? The major plus of course is the new transmission, though it would still need a transmission cooler added for longevity. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, Thanks, SVX seeker

If the body is in nice shape (no rust or major dents) $2500 is a good deal.

Sounds like a good deal to me!

Rotors/brakes are not difficult to do yourself if you are at all mechanically inclined, and there is also a seat restorer (pretty much leather dye) that can be used to cover any cracks in the leather.

Sounds like my car.

Damn good deal.

It has a dimple the size of a grapefruit in diameter, in the rear driver side quarter panel close to where the bumber wraps around. If the sun hits it just right it is fairly visible, otherwise it doesn't stand out. It looks like it can be pulled out fairly easy, not so much a dent, but more of a round dimple. I only wish the interior was not as worn, but I guess you can't have everything for $2500. So even with the brake work and what not, this may be a good deal after all? Thanks for your input.

Sounds like a good deal to me too. The price alone won't even be able to get the new tranny at certain area.

Indeed, my tranny rebuild was ~$2300 :(

Thanks for the positive feedback guys, by the way, the tranny work normally would have cost $2300 (as mentioned above) but the mechanic is a good friend of the owner and only charged him $1700. Your estimates are dead on!

Go for it, 2500 is as fair as it gets. Sooner you get it than Earl ends up with another;)

SVX,
I think its a good deal for 2.5K . I paid 3K for mine with 112K on it, but no other work was needed, i do have a seperation in the stitching of the 'butt part' of the seat, but the leather is in good shape. Go with some drilled and or slotted rotors, and you should be in excellent shape...I would say if you put in $1000 bucks to do engine flush, rotors/pads, coolant flush, bleed the brakes, and get new tires all around, you will have u a heckuva car for $3500 :D:D:D

Thanks guys,

I'll be taking it in for a pre-purchase inspection Saturday. The guy I'm taking it to has his own repair shop, and all he works on is Subarus. I'll give ya'll the low down, then.
