Live Chat problems?

For those who have problems loading the Live Chat application it's usually as a result of not having the necessary version of Java installed.

Unfortunately it does not work properly (for me) with Sun Java and since Microsoft has stopped including their Java VM with their OS's it's nearly impossible to get this application to work.

I have a solution for this Java issue:

Download this file: http://www.mts.net/~dcss/svx.ZIP

Extract the msjavx86.exe from the password protected ZIP file. (The pw is "subarusvx" without the quotes)

Doubleclick on msjavx86.exe to install MS Java.

Run windows update to download the update to the MS Java VM.

In Internet Explorer->tools->Internet options->advanced if the option for Sun Java is there and is checked then uncheck it. If it's not there then don't worry about it.

Reboot and try the Live Chat link. It should work now. If anyone is confused by these instructions please let me know.

Is there a fix for mac os x? I currently use AOL if that matters.

Sorry, you're going to have to use an actual IRC client.

I did a quick search on Tucows and found 2 IRC programs: Snak and JediKnight. I'm sure there's also one that comes with OS X. If you need help setting one up let me know.

Where do I find the one with os X?

Earthworm 12-15-2004 06:17 PM

I'm not sure now if one comes with OS X. We have an i"Lamp" here with 10.2 but I can't seem to locate any IRC clients.

I found another 2 clients: Ircle and X-Chat Aqua

okay i tried this. before when i tried loading the chat i got a little grey box with a red X. and after i did what you said for me to do i just get a grey box with nothing in it. just letting you know it did not work for me, but thats fine because i figured out how to make mirc work instead

Sharky, are you behind a firewall or do you need to use a proxy server?

My work blocks all attempts at using the Java chat client.

sharky512345 12-15-2004 06:34 PM

im not behind a firewall or proxy but my modem has a NAT in it that you cannot disable, stupid msn. i also am using windows 98, and i haven't tried it on my xp computer. so im not sure exactly what the problem is exactly.

Thanks earthworm, I dl jediknight and it works great. Is there somewhere on the site that gives the client info I had to search. Mabey the should put it in the live chat window.

Earthworm 12-16-2004 01:45 PM

I agree there should be info on that page for connecting with an actual IRC client. (for those who don't have MS Java installed)

He was. I was talking to him. I'm still trying to set up a web based interface to the chat room that doesn't rely on MS Java.
