performance exhaust

I asked a local speed shop that handles mostly american muscle how much would fabricating a complete alumnized exhaust system cost for our svxi, and he said,

we have to bring the car in and lay out the system to determine what we will need for parts and labor.
A Custom single exhaust with a Y pipe, cat converters, and a muffler in Aluminized would run somewhere between 1000-1500.00

Re: performance exhaust

Get a Stebro (stainless steel) for cheaper ... if they still make them. Aluminized will rust away in no time.

Edit: maybe not cheaper, its just a cat-back.

That's too much money. A '97 should be left stock IMO. That's how I'm keeping mine.

I have to agree with Blacky. New stock components will last another 15 years. The stainless mufflers on the SVX never wear out. An aftermarket exhaust sytem can detract from the resale value of the 97...The factory prices for exhaust components is not unreasonable (I own a Mercedes, you should see what the components for one of those costs!!)

Are they going to fabricate 2" headpipes from the headers? They also don't mention the resonator. Ask if they ever did a WRX or Porsche. These smaller engines have different requirements for flow and backpressure than American V8's.

American muscle fans like deep, loud and mean at all RPMs. If you didn't like the way it sounded, would they fix the problem at no cost to you?

I'd leave it alone. That $1500 would go a lot farther in getting you a better paint job that would be noticed much more than a ricer exhaust tone.

Stebro I think is out of business. From what I gather they were impossible to contact 3 years ago. My paperwork shows PO of my car spent $2,100 on it.
We are all hopping some day that the SVX will be worth more than $5,000. Will the day come we don't know. I am going to enjoy mine and not try to save it for then. I owned a lot of cars that today are worth a ton of money. Could I have saved my 1956 Chevy Convertible for 45 years. Not likely. My 70 Cuda,my Corvair Turbo convertible. Etc.

Stebro is not out of business. I posted the link above. Resonator, pipe and muffler is $1350.00 Cnd. They are located in Ottawa, Ontario about 50 miles from me.

Stay as far away from Stebro as possible! FRAUDSTERS, do a search on google and you'll find car forums with owners throughout the country that have had horrible experiences, myself included!

Re: performance exhaust

The exhaust I built for my car (see my signature) cost ~$500 for parts. It could do with an additional resonator, but is still quite good. It uses all aluminized pipes. I don't think $1000 is totally insane given the amount of time custom exhaust work takes, plus the consumables used up.
