rattle and vibrate

so i have this problem. when i start my car and put it into reverse, back up and turn the wheel to the left my steering wheel vibrates(like a chain fed .50cal busting off 15 rounds) Then @ highway speeds over 60 mph the wheel again vibrates (like a ak-47) I was wondering if anyone can help me diagnose and fix this problem. Sorry for the gun references maybe i just play too many fps video games.:p

How much dead space do you have in the steering wheel before the wheels move? It should be very small about 1/2 inch or so and should not feel loose. It could be something in the tie rods or rack and that will check that.

It could also be the ball joints or the bushings in the suspension.

It is somewhat puzzling becasue you notice it at low speed backing up and then at highway speeds. I was thinking that the tire is rubbing.

When it feels similar to firing off a water pistol it's fixed. :D

Umm, there isn’t more than an inch dead space in the steering. I’m not very mechanical (can accept concepts, but little wrench twisting experience. Hoping to change that ;)
I first noticed it backing up, but now it seems to be the most pronounced when turning the wheel @ low speeds to the left. I’m sure it is not a tire, and if I could tune the sound I would say somewhere between the brake and the front differential. What would a funny axle do? Or whatever is @ either end of the axle…lol
I’m gonna put it up on the hoist and see. I’ll let you know how it goes….

Replace your power steering 0-ring.
