10% Gasoline

Hi everyone, Something interesting has come uo in the gasoline business. For a number of years here in southeast Michigan, about all you could buy was gasahol. 90% gasoline 10% ethyl alcohol. Now, Citgo and Shell are selling plain gasoline. Since the alcohol is often used as an oxygenation additive in the winter, why would these guys go to gasoline now? The good news is that gasoline has more BTU's than alcohol, so your mileage should be a little better. Lets hope so. Take care, BOBB

Bobb, I didn't even know that SE MI gas was 10% ethanol. When it was added to the gas in WI, they put big signs on the pumps - I never saw such a sign in MI.

Was I just not paying attention?

Gasahol

Hi Nick, Yeah, its part of the disclaimer about meeting Michigan's purity standards for gasohol or gasoline. I've often wondered what the difference should be in price, since you have less energy in gasohol than in gasoline. Maybe some informed person on the site can clue us in on the difference in BTU's in a gallon of gasoline versus a gallon of gasohol. Take care, BOBB

BTU's

Hi everyone, I tracked down this information. One gallon of ethanol has 77,000 BTU's. One gallon of gasoline has 91,300 BTU's. There-fore a gallon of gasohol has 89,870 BTU's. Of course I arrived at this number using KY math. Or, gasoline has about 1.6% more energy than gasohol. So, gasohol should sell for 1.6% less than gasoline to be equal in price. Take care, BOBB
