Not getting any spark!
 

New engine and wiring wwere removed and transported carefully for my LGT. We also installed it makig sure not to damage anything. Engine cranks over, fuel is being supplied, but has no spark! :( Ignition coils have the 0.01 vdc on ecu to each coil but getting nothing to the plugs. Any ideas. Dave told me there is a connector/wire that comes loose over time could that be it? Bad ground maybe? Please help!

Check for voltage at ignitor, and make sure your cam sensors are plugged in and undamaged.

I have been going through this car and wiring all day today and yesterday, but cannot find the problem. We checked voltages in every pin from the ecu and all were good besides B62 pin 6 (Canister purge control) has 12 volts while engine is on and says it is supposed to say 0 volts. Also B62 pin 22 (EGR) has 12 volts and says it is supposed to be 0. Could this be causing me to not get any spark.

Ignitor is getting proper voltage. Maybe ignitor is bad?

I am beging to loose faith in myself. :(

So you went over the cam sensors and the wiring was ok? Did you take them out and inspect them too?

No did not remove any sensors. Can I checked resistance on the sensors or is that a different for these?

No resistance checks wont work..... just check the tips for debris... you can use a voltmeter attached to the two terminals and look for a voltage jump as something metallic is waved in front of the tip. Otherwise its just a visual inspection.

Alright is the a DIY on how to remove the sensor or is it easy to get to?

Its easy, theres one next to the battery on the rear of the timing belt cover, the other one is under the alternator.... which is right on top. Both are held by a single 10mm bolt. the other one under the alternator is the crank sensor... might as well clean the tip of that one too. They tend to build up semi-magnetic crud on the tips which can mask the hall effect signal.

:confused::confused: The coils are continuously supplied with 12 volts via the ignition switch and 15 amp fuse number 16 and are switched in the negative leg by the igniter. Check for this voltage.

It should be possible to read a minimum of 5 volts in the negative circuit to each coil, while cranking the engine. Each time the negative circuit is open this reduced voltage appears, as a result of the series resistance in the primary winding providing a path for current.

As a definitive test, remove a coil and externally fit a spare spark plug grounded to the engine block. Crank the engine and check for a spark. Best done out of bright light.

Ok, but why does it say in this pin out that the ignition coils have .01 on the coil at engine on?

The terminals involved i.e. 7,8,9,10, 21 & 16, are outlets from the ECU which trigger the igniter. There is no direct connection to the coils. At this point the ECU solid state switches are in effect open, but a residual voltage will be present, hence the very low 0.01 volts.

Dave and I checked cam sensors and crank sensor and all were fine.

I found out that the oil pressure switch is not hooked up to anthing. Single yellow/black stripe wire. Would that cause a problem with starting?

The switch does nothing more than switch on and off the fault lamp on the dash and has no control function. It can not effect starting or the running of anything.

You have advised that are not getting any spark. Refer post #10 and trace though the low tension circuits which energise the coils. Not rocket science. :D
