Transmission not engaging

I'm helping a friend with his car. Its a 92, has 85k miles. Basically when you start the car and put it in gear, it is not engaging. It does absolutely nothing in all gears including reverse. It does not make any sounds and you don't feel the car move or anything when put in gears. If you press on the gas pedal it just revs the engine.

The power light is not blinking.

The transmission fluid was empty at one point, someone added fluid and it is now full but still does nothing at all.

I'm not convinced yet the transmission is gone  and was wondering what you guys think?

It could be a failed torque converter, shift linkage...could be a good handful of things. The first thing I would do is make sure that the transmission is actually getting shifted out of park. If it is, then the prognosis becomes a bit more bleak.

A good way to tell if the trans is actually coming out of park, is to see if you can move the car physically.

Well it is definately shifting out of park. We gave it the push test. In park it doesn't move, in Neutral we can push it.

(we tried in park because it had been towed many times and where a bit afraid they may have forgot to put it in neutral and broken something else)
