Ignition?

So pretty much i'm having intermittent starting problems. I did the Bosch relay mod, the car started for about a week. I drove up to school (about 2 hours) and now it doesn't start at all. I can jump the positive terminal(30) to the terminal of the relay that the ignition is attached to(86) and it starts right up. So it seems that there is no current flowing (or not enough) from the ignition to terminal 86 on the relay. So I guess I wanted to know what exactly to check for. Do I get a new ignition switch (83131PA000), or is it more likely old wires, insufficient gage wire, etc. Am I on the right track?

Re: Ignition?

if you check under the dash you should see a harness with 4 wires in it.
about 12Ga size if i remember..

one is 12+, one is Ignition, one is ACC/heater, and the other is start signal..
can't remember colors right now.

check for power on 3 of them in the "on position",
1.Constant from the battery,
2.ACC/Heater And Ignition.
3.the 4th only during "start".
if not then possibly bad switch in the column.

Im not sure what you have checked for, but one easy thing to try is to switch the AT lever into Neutral or bump it forward a few times in Park. Sometimes the switch can go bad and intermittently cause the computer to think its still in gear, disabling the starter circuit.

If that doesnt apply, then you will have to check the circuit from the relay to the ignition switch, and find where the voltage signal is being disrupted. You have the wiring diagrams from the service manual right?

Alright, so I just got done checking the voltage on those 4 terminals with the key in the on position and nothing. No voltage on any of them. So I'll continue to check voltage drops 'upstream' tomorrow....

Also, is there supposed to be a bosch relay right there in the picture? Did one of the previous owners already do some type of relay mod?

Re: Ignition?

So, I figured it out... It was the neutral safety switch in effect. Basically the new transmission I put in this summer had a wiring harness with a broken clip which didn't hold the wiring securely. So after looking through this wonderful wiring diagram of the starting circuit http://www.seccs.org/tech/manuals/19...G_DIAGRAMS.pdf

the problem was solved. Thanks guys for your help!:D
