Head Bolts
Just thought I'd share in case anybody hasn't heard of a company called Headbolts.com. They sell head bolts for Subarus at a much better price than the dealers. A set for an EG33 is $84.95 + s/h. Cost me $91.80 to my door. Compare to Subaruparts.com which sells OEM head bolts for $130.45 + s/h.
I've done a bit of research on bolt strengths and was happy to see that the ones from Headbolts.com are AJUSA brand class 11.9k bolts. This converts to about 169,258 psi tensil strength. Very close to the minimum strength for any ARP bolt (170,000 psi). Of course ARP does make bolts with tensil strengths up to nearly 300,000 psi. FYI, grade 8 bolts have a 150,000 psi tensile strength which is about 5,000 psi less than class 10.9k bolts. |
Thanks for the information. :)

Thought I'd drag up this thread rather than start a new one...
I bought an EG33, and I'm planning to replace most of the gaskets/seals, mainly to keep the driveway clean. Q) Should I replace the head gaskets while the engine is out of the car ? (History is unknown, but engine has about 120k on it, runs smooth.) Q) If I do, are the head bolts re-useable, or do they need to be replaced ? Q) Earl, are we related ? (George/John Steele, Hartford CT, way, way back...) |
