Door Locks

Some door lock issues that I hope to fix:

The only way to enter my car now is to use the key in the drivers door and then reach through to unlock the passenger side.

The key does not work in the passenger side, but I can operate the lock from inside the car.

The central locking feature also does not work.

What is causing these problems and what do I need to fix them??

First I would check the fuse. It's easy and quick.
If the fuse is OK than you are in for a little digging.

When you insert the key into the passenger door does it go all the way in?
Can you turn it at all?
If so how much?
Do you hear the electric motor operate in the drivers door or passenger door when the locks are moved from the inside?

Start with these little tests and let us know.

After that you will want to check all the connections. There are connectiond in both doors and behind both kick panels.

I had an issue where the passenger doorlock did not follow the driver's door lock and the problem was a poor connection behind the driver's kick panel.

wow, just realized the key does not even go in all the way on the passenger side. What does that mean?

Have both door panels off now. The backside of the passenger lock looks pretty corroded/rusted. The driver's side does too, but oh well that side works fine. I hear no motor on either side when I move the locks from the inside manually. My main goal right now is to be able to open the passenger side with the key and then worry about central locking and the remote later. What needs to be done to make this happen?

I would disassemble to door handle and soak the lock in WD-40 overnight. Other than that I would consider replacing the lock.

I can not remove the door handle/lock from the door because of the metal piece sticking out from the lock. This means I can not soak or fiddle with the lock, or even replace it. Not sure what to do now......

Can you get pictures of it? That would help a lot, I do not understand what metal you are talking about.

Here is a pic from outside the door, you can see the metal piece in the bottom left corner:

It looks like part of the handle or lock broke off and is causing the problem. A picture of the inside will also help.

I will tonight if I can take some pictures from the inside to guide you thru removing the complete handle. Even if that piece of metal is there you should be able to get the handle out. With out damage.

That would great Steve. I searched the forums and could not find anything on removing the handle. It just doesn't seem like it wants to fit through the hole. Any tips?

Here is the PDF on the door handle with pictures. Sorry it took so long, I had a yard sale to do.

If you need any other help let me know.

Steve.
Thanks for the PDF.

I am attempting to get the passenger side handle out so I ignored the first few steps but I disconnected the rods and removed the bolts and screws, but the handle does not want to fit through the hole. The lock is getting in the way. I have circled the metal piece that I was talking about before on the attached picture. There is also another piece of metal behind the circled part that is not visible in the picture(roughly represented by the black rectangle) ,but also gets in the way....

thanks for the help

Never really messed with it, but it looks like all you have to do is remove that circlip, and the piece troubling you will slide off. The thing that looks like an E hugging the post that I circled it in this pic is the clip I am talking about.

Use some needle nose pliers and maybe a screw driver to keep it from rotating to get it off if you have trouble. Be carful, cause they tend to fly off on you. You don't want to lose it, but if you do you can ussually get a pack of 6 for like 50 cents at the hardware store.

The lock should have a wire clip holding it to the handle. With the door handle loose look in from the outside and see if there is one. A needle nose pliers should be able to pull it out.

I will look at mine tonight and see what I can do.
