Pocono Raceway Track day

I'm on the mailing list for the South Jersey SCCA and just got this message from them. I thought there might be a couple members interested.

Hi folks,

What are you doing on Friday or Saturday June 16th and/or 17th? Can't
think of anything off the top of your head huh?

How 'bout a couple of days driving your car around Pocono Raceway's
Long course? Each day you will receive about 2 hours of driving time.

This is a great event for novice, intermediate and advanced drivers.

Last year, novices were eased into the Performance Driving eXperience.
The first session, was a session with a pace car. This gives each
student driver the chance to really see the course. (kind of like
walking the course in autocross) At a lower overall speed students can
more easily digest layout of the track, work on driving lines, work on
technique and become aware of flagging stations.

The next session was a no-brake exercise that helps the student learn
about looking and planning ahead, how much speed can be carried into
and through a turn, and helps students concentrate on their lines
though corners. Speeds were obviously a bit lower and following
distances were greater. Oh and relax, I had a student who felt she
needed to use the brakes and used them... no problemo.

The third and fourth sessions, were more typical track day sessions as
most clubs run them. Passing zones, point-bys and safe driving fun.

Intermediate drivers pretty much followed the same formula, but speeds
and focus was a little different.

Advanced and Instructor sessions were open track, but still following
the same passing rules, with point-by and in only certain areas.

Personally I really like the way our tri-region folks are easing
novices into driving fast around a track. I've been to a variety of
different track-days as a novice ranging from the very safety
conscience, to the lots o' faith in new drivers, and I can say I
really prefer our program's approach. The SCCA has the best club
racing program in the nation, and will be drawing from that talent
pool as well as other marque performance driving groups, like the
Porsche and BWM clubs.

This is also a great opportunity for regional and national drivers to
both get some seat time, and help up-and-coming racers and encourage
new drivers by instructing.

I hope you will take advantage of our second annual track day by
coming out and driving or volunteering your time.

what about lodging etc?? I would be very interested in going but I don't think I would be able to afford to pay lodging for the weekend plus $250 to race... Then there is beer and food.... Sounds like a good idea though

I'm going to Pocono May 12 with the Connecticut Autocross and Rally Team (CART). It is a very similar event, but looks like you get a little more track time, even though there is less instruction available. The tab is $170. You have to have a Snell 2000 helmet or better, and a tech inspection.

The Performance Driving Association also has a track event on the long course also runs event sat Pocono. I've done two of those. They are very good, you get four 25 minute sessions on the track. The cost is the same as the SCCA deal. They have a rally big weekend on August 18,19,20, with the long course on the 18th, a double infield course on the 19th and a single infield course on the 20th.

For the May 12 event at Pocono, I'm just going to drive up for the day. I've stayed at a Hotel at Pocono before, and the tab is about $80 for the night. Also plan to burn a tank of gas at the track itself, and use up the better part of a set of front brake pads.

I'm going to go for either the June SCCA event, or the August PDA event, or maybe both. CART and PDA also have events at Watkins Glen and Lime Rock. I think I'm going to Lime Rock with CART in October. Hope to go to Watkins Glen next year.
