i replaced the small hoses coming off the water pump put some new coolant in and took it for a drive . all seemed good until yesterday jumped in warmed her up drove about 3 miles and cel came on then went off after about 5 secs i stoped did the testy thing and got maf and pass side 02 sensor again oddly the car wont clear the codes . so driving back home again it all seems fine untill i slow back down to 30 mph coming through a town i could hear the fans running full blast stoped and had a look. the liquid (part p/s oil , part engine oil and part coolant) thats ontop of my engine was bubbling and after about 30 secs of looking under the hood i quickly turned the car off as it was just under the red temp line .
does anyone know why it would be doing that i cant figure it out
i will be giving her a rest in a few months as im going to put my ke70 sedan back on the road and start saving for refurbishment and rebuilding of my pearlie

Did you make sure that there was no air in the coolant system when you filled it back up (no more bubbles coming out of the radiator neck)?

smell your coolant overflow bottle if it smells like exhaust then it could be your head gasket.

This sounds like the bad news of a blown head gasket :(

Your initial overheating problem may have killed them. I would first replace the thermostat though.... cheapest easiest thing to eliminate..... then you should try to find a "block tester kit" to confirm there is exhaust gasses in your cooling system. It is also possible if the HG is really bad then your oil and coolant may have already mixed, which will be evident with a frothy oil coming up with your dipstick, the presence of oil spots floating on top of your coolant in the reservoir or radiator, or coolant coming from your exhaust.

But do the T-stat first, just to rule it out before worrying about the HGs'.

yep its the HG then :(

coolant smells like coolant :rolleyes: lol

nope no air i learned that trick with my old corolla :D just run it with the cap off til the thermo opens and fill up full again

i couldnt see any frothy stuff in the oil but there is definatly a layer of shiney stuff floating in the rad :(

dagnabit i guess il have to give her the rest she needs early. and start saving for her future restoration

That really blows man, I feel for you :(

I guess you can look at it as an opportunity to do a full reseal when you have the motor out, then you will be good to go for another 150K miles :)

Whoo just a Minuit there.
If it overheated when it lost water from the hose. it probable overheated the thermostat, melting the wax out of it. Thats the shiny bit on the water.

Just try replacing the thermostat.:)

thanks socal yeah i guess so haha id like to do a full rebuild tho wen/if i can save the money for it

well changed the tstat no change :(
dad gave me this stuff called "Goss chemiweld" to use in it until i can afford to do the hg

for some reason the overflow isnt flowing back into the rad both were full beforehand and after i let the car cool for an hour the rad was just above the fins and the overflow was still full ????? it didnt/hasnt overheated since i put the chemiweld in and took it for a drive tho :)

Oh no :(

That stuff is nasty, and will remain in the engine after you do the HG work.....

The reservoir is staying full because the pressure in the cooling system builds enough to force coolant out of the radiator and into the res, but the HG leak does not allow the cooling system to hold negative pressure to suck it back in. The chemi-weld is a band-aid fix at best but may have unforseen negative consequences for the rest of your engine..... Hopefully you will be ok though, just do the block test to confirm your HG leak then do them as quickly as possible.

I hope you removed the thermostat before putting that in your radiator or you will need to replace it an the o-ring again. The stuff isn't recommended to be put in the engines although I tried something similar myself when I was having HG issues. It worked for about a week. I would say don't do it.

The coolant isn't going back into the rad because your radiator cap is bad. I had similar issues a while ago and led to replacing the t-stat twice and the rad cap twice because of faulty OEM parts new out of the bag.

Did you read his prior posts about redlining the temp gauge after a bypass hose busted?

I missed that, but if he shut it off after that it could still be ok. It can overheat when the coolant level is too low.
