Svx 6 spd conversion

Jut wondering what it would take to do a 6 speed conversion and what tranny and parts it would take.
Thanks
Phill

Phil,
PM TomsSVX and SubaFreak - they've both done 6spd swaps.

Money....

The 6 speed ain't cheap and neither is the r180. I got lucky and got a good pirce on a previous car so I could afford it. I also got a steal on the parts.

Its possible to do the 6MT conversion without installing the R180. All you need is 3.90 ring and pinion gear from an R160 with a 3.90 axle ratio. The mid '90s Imprezas have this axle ratio. This is what I did this for a customer in Switzerland. Then the 6MT install is not much more difficult than the 5MT install and not quite expensive as doing the R180 option.

I only used the R180 becuase it was at a good price to begin with. I didn't feel like blowing up an R160 if I began to make more power. The SVX should have been equipt with an R180 to begin with, but that is a whole different discussion

Awsome So it would work if i found a new impreza parts car with the 6spd and the rear 180 diff?

Yes but the pedals need to be fabbed up and the luinkage needs to be extended... yada yada yada.

So it possible to swap original rear diff with Suretrac Rear LSD R160 ring and pinion gears? I mean, would it be better or more headache, trying to fit them in?

mbtoloczko 01-07-2006 02:51 AM

The Suretrac unit is just the LSD mechanism. It does not include the ring and pinion gears. Most of the 3.90 R160s are non-LSD, so adding something like the Suretrac mechanism would be helpful. The mechanism is pretty expensive though. One good reason to go with the R180 is because all the R180 variants have pretty good LSD action, and R180's are generally cheaper than the cost of a high performance LSD mechanism for an R160.

Here is spec page for the WRX 2002 5sp turbo tranny

Can somebody help me to figure this out - does it mean that I'm going to put more pressure on my transmission or less? Thank you

Not sure if I understand your question.

TomsSVX 01-07-2006 11:46 AM

The R180 definatley has better LSD action. The rear wheels on my car tend to skip slightly when turning sharp or accelerating around a sharp turn. You can tell the LSD is working very well. The R160 never did this for me

I'm sorry, sometimes my english sucks. :o
What I'm trying to ask is that: by looking on a spec page which I attached to my previous message, you can see that turbo transmission has different gear ratio, other then regular ones. Sedan or wagon (non-turbo models) has 4.11 or 3.90 ratio. But turbo has 3.90 rear and 3.545 front. By reading other treads I seen some people was saying that the smaller ratio is the more pressure on the transmission. Hopefully, I'm miss-understood, because that's what I have installed in my svx.
