window scuffing

As my drivers window goes up and down it seems like it is being scuffed on the outside, is this something common? and is there a way to fix this?

kis86 05-03-2007 11:59 AM

yea...

This is something I'd like to know as well. Along with...is there any way to polish scuffs out of glass? :P

It must be a pretty common thing because I have it on my drivers window too. I have also seen it on many other SVX's. It would be great if someone knew a way to fix it. The Subaru dealer pretty much told me awhile ago that there was nothing that could be done.

Or do a search on scratched glass or window pads. There are remedies.

Maybe a year and a half ago, I tried refurbishing the pads on my Claret according to the posts from the links above. I didn't remove the glass. Some of the pads (the ones for the front windows, I think) I removed completely and cleaned with dish doap, Bon Ami, water, a toothbrush, and maybe some other tool for scraping. I did so vigorously many times until the suds & rinse water stopped turning grey-brown or until I gave up! I left the more difficult-to-remove pads in place, and reached the toothbrush down alongside the glass to brush the pads with the detergent and rinse water, even though I think I ended up scratching the glass with the toothbrush. In any case, this cleaning only seemed to make the scratching worse. I say "seemed" because the existing scratches were pretty bad, and although the pad cleaning may have helped reduce the amount on further scratching, it didn't eliminate it, so scratches were still accumulating...Or maybe it's exactly as it seems, and it did get worse.

Now my Laguna has some serious scratch issues, and I'm hesitant to attempt another pad cleaning.

Many other members have cleaned their pads (myself included) and it help eliminate the scratching. I don't really know why yours would get worse.

Can you actually just replace the window pads? Is there anyway to fix the window if it is already scuffed or is a new window the only fix?

If the scratching is not too bad, you can buff out the scratches. If they are bad, I don't think you can fix them. :(

An auto glass shop may be able to fix the scratches with some type of clear urethane they have to fix stone damage. Not sure, but worth a shot.
If the felt is worn off the block it needs to be replaced, or it will continue to scratch. Pretty sure you can order one from the dealership.

Wow I guess this is pretty common cause myy SVX does it too on both front windows!

I noticed scratches throughout the window, not only where the pads were. I took the door panel off and cleaned the pads. I also noticed alot of filth on the whole length of the weather stripping, so I cleaned that too. After I get the window buffed, I'll notice if this helped. I'll keep you updated.

The pads can be replaced wit new parts from Subaru. The process is similar to cleaning the old ones but replaces the scrubbing with lightening of the wallet.
