Hood support struts...(AFBeefcake)

I saw the pictures of your strut installation. I bought the BK.819-5591 struts from NAPA, installed them and found that they won't support my hood.

Had you already stripped out the inner linning of the hood? What would make your hood lighter than mine? How long ago was this picture and installation done? Maybe there was a manufacturing change in the strut if it was several years ago....I am confused and not sure how to make it work.

I'm just speculating based on an experience I had with another car. I tried to find aftermarket hatch supports for a Honda and found that the manufacturer that the parts store (AutoZone) carried marketed at least TWO struts of different designs with the same part number. The earlier one was correct, the later one didn't work.

My hood is carbon fiber and those lifters are only rated at around 25 pounds each. Do you have a carbon fiber hood and is it the same ass the one I have? The lifters have been on my car for over 2 years and they still hold my hood open.

aaahsooo, carbonfiber hood, I did not know that....

There is the problem...my steel hood is too heavy. I will have to try and return these...hope I am not out $53.00 bucks.

Anybody find a strut that works on a stock steel hood?

Dave

Napa 819-5581
I did the mod on my stock steel hood and it works great. Svxcuseme did a great job coming up with this mod and finding the right part from Napa.

All these problems are very strange. Does not the huge market of the US include a facility whereby struts are reconditioned? There is no problem in little NZ.

Hood struts

My hood struts are still like new - as is the car, hood lifts itself approx 15" after opening.

Hey Trevor thanks for your help on the CD shuttle this morning.

Steve also in Auckland

I believe Dayle @ Motorsport Warehouse was researching this for us.

Napa hood struts work great

I Replaced my worn out hood struts today with the NAPA 819-5581 hood struts and they work great. I'm glad someone discovered these ones work on our cars. I really didn't want to pay around $80 dollars each for new stock ones. The removal/installation of the old and new ones was pretty easy as well. The only other thing else I had to buy was a pack of ball studs Napa # 735-1591 and a few nuts and washers. I would definitely recommend this fix for anyone with worn out hood struts.

I tore some out of an old Nissan 300ZX (86) I noticed when I had one that nissan and subaru share a lot of parts (or at least have EXTREMELY similar parts, we used an XT window motor for the headlights on my 300ZX when I had it)

They fit quite well and believe it or not the Z's hood was heavier than the SVX's hood.

But that's me, I'm not so much an OEM kinda guy as I am a; "whatever works" kinda guy. I assume the newer 300ZX's shocks would work just as well.

You could always just drill a hole and mount your own hood prop. :D

The problem here is on price of rebuild/reconditioning. It would cost nearly as much to get them rebuilt as to buy new ones. Remember we are essentially a throw away economy. :(
