Rear Coil Spring replacements ??? Anybody have some made?

Three questions:
  1. Has anyone had new (stiffer) rear coil springs created?
  2. What are the specs of the stock rear springs?
  3. If you were having new rear springs created what would you have them build the new spring spec to?

I called a company in Atlanta that makes springs and they asked for the following:
Type of material - Steel...anything specific to ask for with regards to the material they use?
Free length - ?????? Does anyone have this number from the factory spec. I assume this is the uncompressed height of the coil
Number of coils

I say stiffer because I plan to drive the car for another 100k to 200k longer and don't want to pull this stuff again because of a sagging rear end (old springs). Also, I could create a shim or buy the spacer blocks but I'd prefer to have the new spring mounted in it's original enclosure without using blocks or some other quick fix that could potentially fall out.

I don't need new coil overs, ground control, koni's, or other shocks. Honestly, I can't afford all that and my stock shocks are just fine...and no my mounts are not rusted. The car has been in the south all it's life and has effectively zero rust.

I'm looking for an affordable way to get the back end up another inch (back to factory spec) and keep it there! :)

Any help is appreciated!

Nice one... Im interested to see how this goes. Could be an option for new springs. All 4 or just the rears though?

I was thinking of pulling my fronts off and cut 1 coil off to give the car a nice even stance.

Mychailo Toloczko(mbtoloczko) used to make them but I'm not sure if he does anymore. His website still exists however and contains useful information on his sport springs.

Re: Rear Coil Spring replacements ??? Anybody have some made?

Yep...he was very helpful with my 5mt install and I checked his site. No info on the SVX Coil Height of a new uncompressed rear coil. I tried messaging him here but his box is full.

So unless he see's this post or someone else has the specs my question still stands.

Here's what I have gathered so far (all from Mychailo posts or his site).
  1. Type of material = Steel. My local manufacturer is Newcomb Spring. They can make them stainless or powder coated. I have not asked about the type of Steel they use but I will ask them in the morning and post here. Mychailo uses AISI 9254-K spring steel ("which is about the highest quality spring steel available")
  2. Number of coils = 4.7 coils (Rear Springs), 5.375 coils (Front Sping -"but one coil is inactive")
  3. Stock Spring Rate = 110 lbs/in in the rear, 140 lbs/in (Front Springs)

Items I still need
  1. Free length (Spring Height of an uncompressed new coil) = Rear? Front?
  2. Wire diameter = to be measured tonight.
  3. OD = to be measured tonight
  4. Type of Ends = gotta research the naming convention for one end flat, the other not flat (hehehe)

P.S. I can't figure out how to get the empty 1. out of the lists above!

Stock spring rates are 110/140? Holy marshmallow.

UPDATE:

Here's what I have gathered so far (all from Mychailo posts or his site).
  1. Type of material = Steel...AISI 9254-K spring steel or better. Powder coated.
  2. Number of coils = 4.7 coils (Rear Springs), 5.375 coils (Front Springs)
  3. Stock Spring Rate = 110 lbs/in in the rear, 140 lbs/in (Front Springs)
  4. Free length (Spring Height of an uncompressed new coil) - Rear = 13.6", Front = 14.75"
  5. Wire diameter = to be measured
  6. OD = to be measured
  7. Type of Ends =
    • Rear - Bottom of coil (closest to ground when mounted) - Open End - Not ground
    • Top of coil (Strut tower end)- Closed and not ground. Right-Hand Helix when viewed from top down

Haven't seen these specs from FSM yet:
Rear: Coil diameter Upper: 135mm (5.32 in) Lower: 155mm (6.1 in)
Coefficient of spring:
N/mm (kg/mm, lb/in) LS 19.2 (1.96, 109.8) LS-L 20.3 (2.07, 115.9)

Just my $.02.

Thanks for the info!
Your specs are saying the coil diameter is tapered (thinner at the bottom and thicker at the top)? Is that correct?
Sorry... What are you saying here?

I believe, after working with a couple sets of springs in the last few months, that they're referring to the diameter of the formed coils themselves, not the material. The coils are actually different top and bottom (besides cut vs tapered/flattened ends), thus you cannot mount the spring upside down, as it won't fit the mounts correctly.
Sorry for any confusion, referring to the Factory Service Manual (FSM).

Gotcha! They asked for OD-Outer diameter. Since I didn't get to that step yet, I did not consider the OD of the top versus the OD of the bottom but I will definitely verify and include it!

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction ;)

Do not do that. The car sits too low in the front. You will scrape on every driveway and speedbump. The tires will rub through the wheel well thingies and against the inside of the fender. If you wanna try it I'll sell you my already cut front springs when I change them out in the next month or so.

svxcuseme: I can also send the rear springs to you if you want them as a pattern or template or just as replacements. They're good, only 66k miles on the car, no rust.

Thanks for the offer. I've got a set from my parts car that I will use for reference. Much appreciated though!

No prob. Good luck.

While we're on the subject, does anyone know the spring rates for the motorsport warehouse drop springs?

Edit: Nvm, the site says that they are 200lb front and 170 rear.

Re: Rear Coil Spring replacements ??? Anybody have some made?

Thanks for the help with getting all specs.

I had a new set of rear springs made from Coil Spring Specialties in St. Mary's Kansas, www.coilsprings.com for $203.

They made a huge impovement! Car now rides a little higher than stock in the rear, probably around 1/2". I have Murano wheels and they were scrubbing the wheel liner.

The back end no longer bottoms out, even over large dips or potholes at reasonable speeds. They fit perfectly and came with a 1 year warranty. There should not be any sagging as the coils the new coil spring rate is 150. The car no longer pitches heavily in the back when shifting and I have yet to hear the bottoming out I used to over holes and speed bumps. Very nice!

I plan to post the write up they did for my order, in case others are interested in the future.

I did have to send the first set back as it was based off an order from Mychailo. His were drop springs. They lowered the car by 1/2". So if you plan to have rear springs made, you can use my order number and ask for +1" on height. This will put the rear of the car @ ~ 1/2" higher than stock.

I'll scan in the build sheet with all the specs for those interested. These are great for a long term suspension mod that won't break the bank, will keep the rear of the car where it should be, and will avoid having to use coil spacers or other more expensive things like Koni's.

Thanks,
Marc

I think it strange that no one mentioned Dayle's site.
