Tire size for winter
Hi!
I'm a new owner of a 92 SVX LS-L and I will need winter tire in the next 2 week. For my 92, the recommended tire size is 225/50/R16, but for a 97 it's 215/55/R16. I assume that I can put these two size of tire on my car without problem? If so, what size is better? Also, can I purchase 15" rim and tire on a SVX? I want to know what size will be better for winter tire. If you have other suggestion, let me know. Thanks! I'm located in Mont-Tremblant, Quebec. |
for driving in snow, skinnier tires are better. i have 205/55-16's for snow tires. you want to 'cut' through the snow, not ski over it with wide tires. rally cars use ridiculously skinny little tires for racing in the snow.
you can use any size rim, just make sure to get a tire that gives you the same rolling diameter as the factory wheel/tire. bigger than stock rims will require a lower profile tire, while smaller rims while need a bigger sidewall tire. try playing with this: http://www.dsm.org/tools/tiresize.htm |
I have the 215/55/R16 mounted on the factory steel SVX rims. Perhaps your Subaru dealer will be able to get you a set. Subaru Canada still had a few year before last.
I put Nokian Hakapolita 1 with eco studs on mine. I actually got them from a Nokian dealer in Mont Tremblanc I find them fabulous in the worst weather. |
Thanks!
But I have another question. Do you know if the 205/55-16 tire will fit on stock SVX mag? Quote:

According to attached Nokian Chart the 205/55/R16 will fit 5.5 to 7.5 inch wide rims. SVX rim is 7 in. wide.

i got a set of 4 new wheels at NTB for $99 to use for winter. they actually are nice looking silver 5-spokes. |
I picked mine up used from a local tire shop for $35.00 ea. The dealer was selling new ones for 70.00 or 75.00 ea (Canadian) which I think was 1/2 price.

To correct a previous post, the SVX wheels are 7.5" wide.
Also, you CAN NOT use a wheel smaller than 16". Anything smaller will not fit over the brake calipers. Mike |

Want to sell the rims/tires Pockets? I'm still waiting 1 more day to see if my bid on the rims on ebay holds out (doubtful).
