I would say it would... if the electrical connections work out. As far as a difference in amperage, the SVX should have the ability to handle the amperage on a 96 legacy, and if the amperage rating is higher in the SVX one, that would be a +

They do not interchange. The look almost identical, but the tabs where it bolts on are slightly different and the pulley doesn't line up with the crank/PS pulley.

Thanx for the replies, I figured they didn't or it would be a more popular swap. Would shaving the ears and swapping the pulleys make a difference? I was hoping to get an upgrade in amperage with the svx alt. Leg is like 75-80 I think vs. 90 for the svx. If the swap isn't possible is there a cheap upgrade for the leggy? I can't find anything specific on the google search.

Know of any alternator rebuild shops around? Most can rebuild an alt with higher amperage. Otherwise I'm sure the company that John found for our SVX alternators could get you a boosted Legacy alternator.

Maybe check with John's -SVXFILES- ( I think) Texas folks? They do great work and a phone call would provide you with the information. They do a SVX HD one that is great!

I sent to Maniac Motors an alternator that I thought was an SVX alternator.

It was from a 98 Outback.:rolleyes:
They first told me of my mistake, and then, at my request, rebuilt the alternator, made it look "like New" for the same rediculous $78.00 like our SVX alternators.:)
I am sure that they can upgrade your Legacy alternator to higher specifications!
I am VERY happy with all of the alternators that they have sent to me!
Even if it means that "John" is right!:lol:

I checked their site earlier and they are quite reasonable depending on shipping. I am going to check with the local guy but I bet he will be more.
