front diff seperation from transmission

Ok I did use the search and checked the How To Doc's but didn't see anything both manuals I have don't address anything to do with seperating the front differential from the transmission. So I guess I am basically asking how difficult is it to seperate them? It appears that you would just have to remove the connecting bolts (after removing the flex plate and TC) does it just slide apart at this point? I have a stock transmission and a 4.44 transmission currently but the 4.44 is a little rough and I can't stand the rust on the steel spacer plate between the trans and diff I planned to seperate them clean up the steel spacer and maybe even powder coat the outside edges. As it stands I am sure I have to replace the seals on the trans/diff and I haven't looked up all of that yet but any info or experience others have had would be of help. Also what special tools may be required?

That "plate" is the pump. It's not just a spacer. Its body is made of cast iron. Seperating the diff from the pump is not a good idea unless you need to. You'll have to replace gaskets and the seal tube. I wouldn't reccomend it.

hi well the diff comes off after removing the torque converter ,the steel plate about 15mm thick is the pump assy ,it is not easy to remove this ,it requires releasing the brake band and it would pull out the reverse clutch ,then you have to reset all this ,just get a new seal pipe and seal tube ,torqure converter seal and some good rtv ,the oil pipes also have to come off
make sure you get it all the way back in to place ,there should be no space bewteen the converter and the housing when back in place ,it not you will break the pump

Thank you both for the input! I will see what the seals will cost and decide if it is worth the risk/hassle.

There are a bunch of great products out there for removing rust. Do it after it's back together, vinegar works wonders on rust too.
