Headlight Issue

Was wondering if anybody has a possible idea what could be the issue with my headlights and fog lights.

Last week the regulator on the alternator blow, mechanic said that instead of charger at 14/15 volts it was charging at 19/20 volts. He replaced the alternator, the fusible link and car runs fine, expect for the fact that the headlights and fog lights are not working.

The highbeams and all the running lights, plate, back up lights, brake lights work fine. I checked all the fuses, they are all intact.

Any help with what it could be would be great.

check fuses, but it probably blew out some wiring or connectors. Look over everything and start checking for shorts.

If the high beams work, it may mean that the low beams burnt out from the voltage spike. If you didn't use the high beams while the regulator was malfunctioning, they never saw the high voltage. Also, marker lights, brake lights etc., are just a regular filament, which may have a bit more tolerance for a voltage spike. Fog lights and head lights are of a different design.

If you have access to a FSM, it should show if the high and low beam are on the same fuse. If they are...

Or,..

Take a multi meter to the pig tail at the back of the headlight, if it shows voltage, the bulbs themselves would definitely be suspect.

Just remember, that the light relays control the ground.... the filaments see +12V all the time

Dig into the wiring diagram here , if you don't have the manuals

http://www.phantomotaku.com/SVX/MSA5...ng_diagram.pdf

Starting at page 52.

Re Tapani:

Ahh.. I see what you mean.. I've never tried testing a headlight without turning on the switch first. So would it then follow that power at the pig tail would indicate that the fuse is fine? If that would be the case, would it then also be safe to assume, that if grounding the other side of the bulb makes it light up, that the issue is the relay?

Thanks for the illumination! ( pun intended):)

:) relay, switch or the circuit - I believe.
