Car broken in to.

So I was sitting in my room, working on a lab report when my cell phone rings with an "Unavailable" number for caller ID. I answer it, and it's Public Safety. They tell me my car has been broken in to, in the parking lot. They come pick me up to take me to the lot.

Long story short: Drivers side front lower window smashed, whole stereo cage ripped out, and stolen. Including my Rockford Fosgate head unit, and my garage door opener (in the pocket under the HU).

There really isnt that much damage to the surrounding area of the console, and they even unplugged the HU instead of just ripping the wires out!

Thank god they didnt look through the car more thoroughly or they would have found:
$3000 of golf clubs in the trunk.
$400 radar detector in the armrest.
$300 sub in the trunk.
$250 amp in the trunk.

I took a couple pics, and the PD said to call the "Telephone Report Unit" tomorrow morning to file a report. (no witness = no squad car)

Could have been MUCH worse, but obviously it still sucks. :(

So...how hard will it be to get a replacement window?

Pure_Insanity8 04-07-2005 02:36 AM

Ahhh MAN, that sucks, Scott! :( I take it they don't have cameras in the parking lot? Good thing they didn't get too much or cause a LOT of damage (the upper window would really be a pain).

Will your insurance cover the window repair? Is it worth paying your deductible?

Sorry to hear that Bwana. Hope insurance is able to cover most of the repairs...

what colour glasss is that?

Bwana 04-07-2005 10:21 AM

I'll have to go double check the peices on the ground...
I have a grey interior, so that means it's probably blue, right?

I can relate to what you are going through right now. It happened to me a while back. It really makes you mad. They damaged the door below the handle so I had to have that fixed and painted. They broke the right back lower window as well. Did that just to get a stock stereo unit. Good luck and I am sorry to hear that.

I'm assuming the stereo door was closed right?

ensteele 04-07-2005 12:23 PM

mine was not closed.

I'm sorry to hear that, man! That really sucks.

PS: Where did you park your SVX at?

Theft and vandalism aren't anything new and in the case of cars, it has been like this probably since the day after it was invented. For my part, I replaced my factory alarm right after the first attempted break in of my SVX years ago. You won't be able to stop a determined thief or the kid who just wants to throw a rock through your window, but you can improve the chances of catching possibly detering some of them.

The two most important aspects I changed about the alarm were to add a proximity sensor and a pager. A true thief wants to take as little risk as possible and anything you can do to attract attention to the car, especially before they even touch the car will serve as a huge deterrent. Hence the need for a proximity sensor with a warning zone that can trigger the lights when someone gets too close. This is the best of both worlds, because it gives a visual, and audible if you so choose, indication that there is active protection if a window is broken without triggering numerous false alarms that might just result in a rock through the window incident. Adding a pager is extra icing for those that like to know the instant anything happens to their baby. It helped me catch a person that backed into my SVX in a parking lot and attempted to sneak away.

Yes, the stereo door was closed. I just finished cleaning all the glass out, and I happened to have another "cage" in my closet with a stock stereo in it (actually 2 head units), no CD player though. Funny thing is...it's woodgrain, and my car has the matte gray trim. :D

I feel better about it, thinking of what they COULD have taken. :(

Yes, they are the blue tint...anyone have one for me? :p

Well I got one you can have for $25 plus shipping. I'll get it boxed up and let you know the total if you want but it won't be untill Mon. before I know.

I'm curious do you blast your radio before you park?
