How do you clean your engine? Do you just spray it with the hose or is there somethings you have to do to it first?

Depends on how clean you want it...

It's common for people get some kind of spray foaming engine cleaner available at any auto parts store, spray it on a warm engine, let it sit for 20 minutes or so and then hose it off. It does OK but not great for all the nooks and crannies.

Do detail shops still steam-clean engines? That seems to work really well.

DO CHECK what the instructions say on the can - some cans should not be sprayed onto a hot engine (as I found out with an old car of mine) - it started a fire in the engine bay - lucky I was at a car cleaning spray booth & used the spray to put out the fire.

Lucky only had to replace some of the wiring loom!!!

I use some engine cleaner and spray on the engine and let it set for a while. I use a very low pressure washer with hot water to get the cleaner off as well as some of the oil or grease. I cover the alternator so it doesn't get wet. This works pretty well and cleans it up good. :)

Do I need to worry about covering anything or is everything under there ok to get wet?

Mother's back to black works amazing, and wizards blach renew works ok, but it comes off with water while the mother's soaked completly into the plastic. We used the mother's to dress the bumpers on my mom's volvo xc70 oceaocean race and it took everything we threw at it. I also used the mother's on my svx.

i've heard that steam can penetrate electrical connectors in the engine bay, so that could be a nightmare waiting to happen.

you have to use this stuff in the shade on a cool surface, otherwise it looks like crap.
