Transmission question

I was looking for new transmissions on car-part.com, and I noticed that every Impreza transmission is for a 4 cylinder Impreza. Can I still use the auto transmission out of an Impreza even though it's for a 4 cylinder engine? Also, what years of cars can I use the tranny out of? I've gotten like 3 different time periods and I'm pretty confused.

Tom said 95, I said 96. They were a very small number of MY96 FWD, but most Subaru's after 95 were AWD. I've never seen a 96 FWD, but they could exist.

Ok then. Thanks. Now answer me this, if you will: does it matter if the 4EAT out of an Impreza was for a 4 cylinder engine? Will it still bolt on perfectly and replace my old transmission?
