Power steering line oil leak under rack
 
Hi, I have a serious power steering line oil leak where the two metal lines are held to the frame with a rubber insulated metal clip.this is directly under the engine flywheel. I was preparing to do the power steering pump rebuild outlined in two other threads when I found where the oil is really leaking from. Not clear how to even replace the lines if I could get new ones since on the drivers side they are screwed into something right below the steering shaft where there is no working room ? Any reasonable solutions ?
1992 LSI, 86,800 all stock ,no previous repairs. I have a photo

Make sure it is leaking there. The leaking fluid usually moves down to that area. Check above to see if there is any leaks. I have seen the O-Ring problem look like the rack is leaking. Clean all of the parts and then look for a fresh leak. If you were going to do a rebuild on the pump, I would change the O-Ring first. Usually that takes care of any problems. Good luck. :)

P.S. line leak
 
Thanks , I cleaned it all and the leak is definitley from the line ,a small hole in the top line ,next to the clamp on the center bottom on the rack. It pumped a pint of oil onto the floor .I have some corrosion on the lines in some spots. I am going to clean it up and try high pressure pipe tape and a pipe clamp to see if it will hold. I cannot see how to get to the ends of the power steering lines on the rack to replace them if necessary ?. Are there any other options ?Apprecite your help,Bob

I followed the Pump Repair "How To" but got stuck on step #3 The Idler Bolt retracted when turned clockwise BUT the idler pully did not move back to relax the tension on the belt. I retracted the bolt 3/4 inches but could not shake the pully to get it to retract ? I retightened it again to see if I moved it forward a bit and then retracted again but still no movement of the idler pully on its slot ? I dont see any way to get any push on the bottom of the idler pully to get it to retract on its slot. Did I miss something ? Also your picture shows the PS Pump pully off before you removed the three bolts holding it onto the block ? but no mention of removing it. Does the pully require a "wheel puller" to remove /or will it come off ,assuming I can get the end nut off . I noticed the engine turns over when I put leverage on the pully end nut . Looks more difficult than I thought ?

Hi I got help ,Idler Pulley Nut must be loosened to allow Idler Pulley to slide in the track,obvious now. The How To instructions missed that step and I was inexperienced . The How To also did not indicate that a bearing puller may be needed to remove the old bearing which I had to do. There are three different pumps for the car and mine did not have a snap ring INSIDE the pump body only outside. All repaired and works fine.Thanks

the How TO instructions must be fixed or is worthless.
