problem

Ok, about a month ago i did something stupid. I was giving somebody a ride and when i drove past the house, told me so i stopped and put into reverse. The problem was, i wasn't stopped all the way... bang.

It loosened up the motor mount and i got that tightened. Still there are problems.

Me being not such a car person doesn't know what wrong and ask people their opinion. No one can agree on anything. Some say transfer case, transmission mount, drive shaft, etc.

Basically i just wanted to now if by driving it till i have enough money to fix it, is making it worse.

the problem.

When I start it, i can hear a clunk.
sometimes when i hold it steady at say around 2000 rpm's it will make a grinding sound, but quit when i accelerate. If i go over 5000 rpm's well... it almost feels like it locks up, and alot worse grinding sound. Then at other times... it grinds no matter what I'm doing.

hmm. any suggestions.

The grinding sound is not good. It will not heal. I would stop driving it until you can figure out what it is and then get it fixed. Sorry to hear of your problem. :(

We had something similar happen to us about 4 years ago. Hubby wanted to try a friend's new HD motorcycle, and I was down with flu, so I stayed in passenger seat while Hubby and friend switched. The friend insisted he had experience driving automatic, and I figured hey, how hard can it be?

BIG MISTAKE! :(

Coming up to a red light, the friend FORGOT it was automatic and tried to shift down into 2nd gear. Went into reverse at about 50km/hr or about 31mph!!! OUCH!

We limped home in emergency mode. Mechanic ended up taking out the transmission and sending it to Zurich to be rebuilt. The whole repair ended up costing us around 7,000 Swiss Francs, or about $5,500 USD.

I sure hope your story has a happier ending.

Reverse?

Does reverse still work OK? There has been other cases of the same type of occurance, shifting into reverse while moving forward. It has resulted in the reverse clutch being damaged. :(

Harvey. ;)

Didn't he notice the lack of clutch and the fact that shift stick did not move sideways?

Forgot all about reverse. Reverse, there is a steady and subtle scraping sound. It sound like what ever is makeing the sound is turning.

I'm getting it looked at tomorrow. I get paid so i may have enough money, depending on whats wrong.

Complacency.

I accidentally popped my XT6 into P coming to a red light once.
I had my hand on the shifter, forgot it was auto even though I was pressing the button.
Not sure why I was pressing the button.
Pretty sure I was aiming for neutral but that was 3 years ago. Kinda fuzzy.

Its the engine mount.

They need to be replaced. Were just tightned last time.

dicon0neo 10-27-2005 11:09 PM

Got the engine mount replaced. Quick to notice it didn't fix a thing -600. not happy...

2 days later... i can't go into 3rd anymore. trans is dead.

Just had it rebuilt. But the place that rebuilt it is out of buisness... so the warrenty is crap.

Ebony color.
engine has 66k. engine is great.
left rear strute may need replacing.
air condition air compresser is out.
hail damage. and clear coat is peeling.
transmission is dead of course, but i don't know for sure thats all that is wrong.
and interior is good except for driver seat (big crack in leather) and above visers (someone thought velcro was a good idea.)

Not sure were to price it. I know it won't be much. I'll decide tomorrow on the price. Making an offer wouldn't hurt.

Ill get back to you tomorrow.

dicon0neo 10-28-2005 05:55 AM

I think I may part it.

I don't really want to, but it seems like its the best option me.
