removing cam pulleys

Hey guys, I was out in the garage pondering how to break loose the bolts on the cam pulleys and I think I came up with a slick way to break them loose. Before you take the timing belt off, put a 17mm wrench on one pulley bolt and put your big cheater type 17mm socket on the other pulley bolt and rotate things until the wrench on one pulley is jammed against something solid. (I used a cheater against the floor) Then break loose the first bolt. Reverse the procedure for the other bolt. This will retighten the one you just broke loose but it won't be nearly as tight. Go back to the bolt you just retightened and put the wrench on it and smack the wrench with a soft hammer. Viola! Both bolts broken loose and no damage to the cam pulleys. Sometimes I have these brief moments of clarity.

this is similar to what i did, but without the cheater and the jamming of something solid.

Wish I would have thought of this a month and a half ago.

I bent my pulley and didn't even get the job done :(

thanks boundsie. I get these annoying puddles of oil under the car and keep thinking I should tackle this job. But I also keep putting it off in fear - since right now I can't afford to pay a pro to fix my screw-ups - and I use the car as a daily driver so.....

I'm taking the week between Xmas & New Years off - seems like a good time.

What did you change out? The usual suspects I seem to remember from other posts is seals, oil pump o-ring, timing belt and water pump. Any other candidates?

This is what I bought from Subaruparts.com.

Basically what you said. Seals, o-rings, water pump, belt and assorted gaskets. I'm right in the middle of doing this job but it's going well and I should be able to finish up this evening. I'll try to write up any problems I had when I'm done.

Lee,

I'll be doing the same project during the Xmas holiday. Just ordered a crap load of parts from Liberty Subaru. Don't forget to order Thermostat, Tstat gasket, water pump/gasket and of course the Timing belt.

I did this on my wife's '95 Legacy and it wasn't too traumatic. There're more cam shaft on this car but idential concept regardless. I did end end up parking the front end on ramps and totally removed the radiator out of the Legacy. Also, I cut the tranny cooler lines and replaced them with brand new ones later. Just wasn't worth my time fiddling them loose at the moment.

I would advise that you check your timing before and after this job just for curiousity What I'm worried about is breaking few of those timing cover nuts! Time for lots of PB Blaster I guess.

Good luck.

This needs to be added to the how-to section. Great method.
