Any one/shop that does 5spd conversions?
I've been a member here for a few years now but have been on some what of a hiatus for the past year. I got an e93 series BMW and have been working on that with the help of people on the E90Post forums. Ever since I got my 92 SVX back in 08, the 5spd conversion was always on my mind but I think I'd be in a little over my head if I tried to do the install my self. I'm all for DIY but I just keep putting this off. Is there anyone here that would be willing to do so? IIRC small car does them but I'm not sure if they are still active...

Not sure about Dallas, but a forum search shows Tom Krynock “svxfiles” in Wiley Ford, WV. He is an SVX specialist who owns www.svxfiles.com, Subaru Performance and Repair. It might be a shot, but far from Dallas though!!

Over the past few years, Tom has had some serious health issues, including torn tendons in his hands and torn rotator cuffs, which have seriously affected his ability to do these type of undertakings the way he did in the past. He has ho help to assist with the heavier work. His website says it is temporarily down, but I believe it is down for good. On a positive note, you may be able to get all the guidance and information you need from a long-time, respected member here, who is a lot closer to you. Marisa Ramon “cozykat” lives in San Antonio and has an outstanding 6-speed conversion on her 1993 Anniversary Edition which is absolutely stunning, perfect and has to be seen to be believed. She can give you excellent guidance, input, direction and resources. PM her here. She is on Facebook and Messenger as well. You can see her SVX on Instagram. xcozykatx http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/atta...1&d=1547921908 . |
Re: Any one/shop that does 5spd conversions?
I can tell you from experience . I have owned an SVX for 25 years the first was a 1992 with auto had it 18 years great car but not a lot of fun. I obtained a 1994 with a 5 speed 9 years ago This car is like night and day to he 1992 AUTO .. I'm sure any reputable mechanic can handle this job there is plenty of info and step by step instruction some fabrication is necessary ( pedal assembly . shifter and tranny mount ) it is worth the effort start aquiring all the parts be sure and get all the bolts from the standard donor car

^What he said!
5 speed SVX isn't a rocket, but it's an absolute pleasure to drive and zippy enough. I recommend using 2nd gen Legacy stuff (brake booster, pedal assembly, clutch hydro cylinders, driveshaft, shifter linkage). Hardest part is probly the trans crossmember, but it's not too bad if you're handy. |
Re: Any one/shop that does 5spd conversions?
Well thank yall for all the guidance. I'm not ready quite yet to start spending all the money for the necessary parts, but within the next few months I'll be ready.

Re: Any one/shop that does 5spd conversions?
My SVX is currently at DuSold Designs here in Dallas. They are a fabrication shop and could probably do it for you. They are helping me with my supercharger (tuning), a new custom exhaust and a custom made bracket for my alternator since I had to relocate it to the bottom of the engine.
Check them out and if you call the, ask for Rick. He is the guy working on my SVX right now. I'll warn you though, they are booked solid until about July but they're a good shop and worth the wait. |
Re: Any one/shop that does 5spd conversions?
I'll be doing my own in a month or two, in my garage a couple hours away from DFW. You might hear me swearing...sorry about that in advance. There is a super duper slim chance I might be willing to do another one depending on how mine goes...

Re: Any one/shop that does 5spd conversions?
Haha ok well just let me know. I'm still going back and forth saying I'm just gonna pay some one, then I say no I can do this! So so at the least i may just need some help. Also, I'm the guy you gave those free parts to so I wouldn't mind lending a helping hand on your swap to gain some knowledge whenever I'm ready for mine

Re: Any one/shop that does 5spd conversions?
As long as we are talking about it, I would love to have a shop recommendation or someone in the PA area help with mine.
I am planning to tackle it myself in the spring but only because I don't know where else to take it since Tom got injured. |

Re: Any one/shop that does 5spd conversions?
My 5 speed swap was from a WRX. I can't speak for other choices but I know that when I gassed it on my gravel driveway it spewed chards at all 4 corners. The car was also literally unstoppable in snow. The downside, and this depends on what you're after, is that it also had a very tall final drive. I liked it -- thought it fit the refined GT character of the car. But if you're looking for 0-60 times you might want to look at alternatives.
One thing I'm sure of is that it transforms the SVX. Oh, if only Subaru had offered a manual. |
