clearing the engine codes

I pulled the code for a check engine light. It came up a #37 LH O2 sensor. I changed the left O2 sensor. Left as you're sitting in the car. I tried to clear the code using the instructions on the how to page and I'm still getting the left O2 sensor code flashing. Any ideas on what I could be doing wrong.

is the check engine light still coming on (and the code shows O2 sensor), or do you just want to get rid of the code in the memory?

oxygen sensor code

I put the left O2 sensor in saturday and drove it a few miles today and didn't see it come on. When I do the diagnostic check with the one blue wire I still get #37 and want to clear it from the memory. Maybe something is wrong with the replacement or I'm not clearing the code right. It seems pretty cut and dry but the code won't clear. I don't notice any changes in the cars performance. I'll see if the CEL comes on this week. Thanks for the input.

to clear the code in memory you have a couple of choices (that I've read about, never done any of these myself - so far).

a) disconnect the battery overnight
b) assuming no big capacitors (like for an add-on amp/woofer combo) disconnect the battery (both posts) & touch a wire between the positive & negative cables (NOT the battery posts). this discharges the residual charge the ECU uses to retain memory
c) search for the diagnostic terminal mode for clearing memory. if you want to go this route and can't find it, post back I'm sure I've got it somewhere, just can't find it at the moment.

I was able to clear a code on my aunt's SVX using the 2 blue wire method.

that's what I meant for (c) above - is the write up on your site?

clearing engine codes

Thanks for the input on this matter. I still haven't been able to clear the left oxygen sensor code from memory but I have a few questions. If the code is still in the memory after supposedly replacing with a good part, will this uncleared code affect the performance in any way. Also, If I have multiple codes in memory for different malfunctions do the blinking patterns follow one after another. For my oxygen sensor code #37 It just kept repeating so I think I only have one problem. Sorry for the length and thanks again for the feed back.

You've got to drive for a few minutes..

Nobody seems to say this, but you have to drive the car for about 5 minutes (must be time or rev-based) until the CEL starts flashing quickly with no pattern. Then stop, turn off engine, take out the blue wire from no 1, leave no 2 in and then when you check codes again there should be nothing in the codes.
