weird grinding/scraping noise

hey guys,

I'm not sure what it is, but there is a scraping/grinding noise coming from the front of my SVX whever i stop accelerating, or when I am going in reverse. It seems to be coming from the front of the car, so I thought at first that it might be a loose exhaust pipe, but don't see any drooping pipes. The worst part is that sometimes, when i'll be cruising, it will make a scraping noise, and the car slows down. Any help on what this might be would be greatly appreciated!!!

My first thought on that - have your brakes checked. Could be a brake caliper that's sticking & causing the brake pads to drag. While you're having the brakes checked, have 'em check the suspension as well. Most places will do that for little or no charge.

Chances are, if it were a problem with the exhaust, it would be louder. A bad heat shield on the catalytic converter could do it though. Anything else is likely to be constant and sound like a race car.

While on your way to have it looked at, try to isolate which corner or the car it's coming from (IE: drive with only one window down at a time, to figure out where it's loudest). The more info you can give the mechanic, the better your chances of them finding the problem on the first try.

I second the caliper seizing suggestion.

allright, i'll get the brakes checked asap. thanks for your help, hopefully that is what is wrong, I'm pretty sure the brakes are pretty low anyway, since they squeel sometimes. once again thanks for the help!!!..........:D  :D

could also just be

the flimsy metal shield behind the rotor....
they tend to bend easily and Ive also seen
were a small rock gets wedged between the rotor
and shield causing a noise like that.....

Jack up the front of the car until the wheels are off the ground. Grab each wheel with your hands and try to move them. See if there are any loose parts. (Ball joints, bushing, lug nuts)

My first thought was worn and binding CV joints ..... but then again, maybe not ....

well, just in case you guys haven't heard yet, i'm not sure how much longer i'll have to worry about this problem, thanks for all your help, yeah, my SVX is wrecked, hopefully, they won't total the title and fix it, but i don't know.......

AppStateSVX 06-23-2004 09:35 PM

well, it's BACK, I was sure that I had it fixed when I took apart the heat shield off the Cat., but the noise is back witha vengence. It only happens when i let off the gas, I got the brakes checked, they're good. So i'm at a loss as to what it might be. It's a scraping/grinding noise that drives one insane......

Ok i had this happen twice to me. In my opinion it could be two things. I had it the first time and whenever i accelerated it would make this scraping noise from the bottom of the car. That turned out to be just a loose bolt! The second time it happend it came from the front of the car and it ended up to be the brake pads were very low. I dont know if this helps ya out but i hope you get it fixed soon. I know how annoying it can be.

the only thing is, it only happens when i let off the gas, We took it to get the brakes changed, b/c that was my initial though, but all 4 pads are still good. Other than that, I have no idea what it could be. I just had the Heat Shield welded back into place, so that takes away that. Is it possible that the Exhaust Pipes are somehow scraping against the drive shaft? Because sometimes, the scraping will get real bad and cause the car to "jerk back" while i'm cruising. I need som help, or I might go crazy soon.!!

I had a car where the heat shield around the pipe after the
cat was bent and rattling against the mid pipe. It was hard
to see until I got under the car while it was running and
I had it on 4 jackstands.

well, the thing is still there, i'm going to try Dayle's idea ASAP, but does anyone else have any idea of what this is? The other sound that is strange is a buzzlike one that occurs under acceleration........thsi junk is no joke driving me insane.......

n00b on demand 06-30-2004 09:38 PM

I think that buzzing noise might be the resonator. Correct me if I am wrong.

n00b on demand 07-01-2004 09:25 AM

When the resonator is bad does the buzzing come from underneath the car or from the back? Maybe i have been wrong about my muffler. My mechanic said nothing was wrong with it. Maybe its been the resonator this whole time? Hmm
