Woo hoo!

I did my first autocross in the MR2 today. Yesterday was canceled, a decision I disagree with completely, but whatever. Today was a hell of a lot of fun. :)

What a fun little car to drive. I mean, I've been driving it for a week, but obviously not like I drove it today. It just changes direction so quickly...

...the only complaint I have is the tires. They're total, utter poop and I was completely limited by them today. I barely had to touch the brakes and they'd lock up in the front. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure I flat-spotted one of the fronts. I had a shake in the steering wheel on the way home that I haven't noticed before. It could be something else, but the car did so well I have a hard time believeing I broke something.

My wife rode with me on her first fun run, too, which is really cool. I thought she'd hate it but she giggled the whole time. :) I'm glad I put both harnesses in the car!

That's awesome Pockets! Those little mid-engine cars can change direction on a dime - in both a cool and uncool way!

How'd you stack up against the other cars there? Is the MR2 more or less competitive than the Justy?

Ha, well, I'd have to say that it'll probably be considerably more competitive in its class. I was about three seconds off a WRX, which is a class above the MR2, but that guy was on race tires. I think with good tires and more experience I can easily make up that gap. There were a couple Miatas there, both of which will be moving to ES next year with me. One guy I beat easily because this was his first event in 25 years. The other was running times that were similar to my own, and he was also on race tires.

Before yesterday I was thinking about running STS2 next year. Now I've changed my mind again and want to run ES. This car would just be too much fun on r-compound tires, and they could easily help me make up the difference I need to, so I think that's what I want to do. Plus ES will be cheaper - I don't know that i can spend what I would have to in order to be really competitive in STS2. I don't want to move into a mod class until I can do everything that's legal. :)

Added photos to my locker:

For me, it was an event fraught with failure and mistakes. Some of that was due to the tires and most of it to my lack of experience with the car. Fortunately my wife caught all of those mistakes on film forever. :D

After '85, Toyota deleted the rear anti-roll bar from the Mk1. That's why the little thing rolls so much on exit:

But, yeah, thre is a little body roll during braking, too. Give it a break - it's 19 years old. :)
