LED bulbs that will swap directly
are there any LED bulbs that will swap into the blinkers directly without having to add anything to make them blink?
thanks |
Re: LED bulbs that will swap directly
LED bulbs by their nature draw less power than incandescents, so they will hyperblink. Unless you can find some LED bulbs with load resistors built in, which I haven't seen yet, you'll need to do something to get them to blink at the right rate.

Re: LED bulbs that will swap directly
^^This. They'll blink, but it'll be at twice-ish the normal speed. You can replace the OEM flasher relay with one meant for LEDs to get things working correctly, or wire in a resistor to add some load to the circuit.

Re: LED bulbs that will swap directly
how would you add the resister? im not anything close to an electrician :D so if its real difficult then it would probably be out of the question
do you guys know of a good website to buy some bulbs from? |
Re: LED bulbs that will swap directly
These guys seem to have lots of listings:
http://www.superbrightleds.com/cgi-b...rake-turn.html If you go down the page toward the bottom you'll see the flasher units and resistors. I may end up going with LEDs for my signals and license plate lights one day, but I don't know about the brake lights. If you installed LED brake lights in an SVX you'd be getting the "Stop lamp" dashboard light all the time because the car thinks a bulb is burnt out. To deal with this you have to add a resistor that brings the power draw back up to what a normal bulb would consume, so the end result is that you don't save any power using the LEDs. Alternatively you could disable the dashboard light. |
Re: LED bulbs that will swap directly
the main reason i was looking into it was fro brightness because my rear lights are real dim.
they would still be brighter wouldn't they? |
Re: LED bulbs that will swap directly
Wiring in a resistor is super easy. I'll MSpaint a diagram for you :)

Not pretty at all, but here you go. Pretty self explanatory I think, once you take off the side marker light, and the wires are right in front of you. I looked through the wire diagrams from the FSM, but I couldn't find the wire colors, but it should be pretty easy to figure out if you look at the bulb socket.
The rear blinkers don't have the 3rd wire for the parking light, so you just wire the resistor across the two wires. |

Re: LED bulbs that will swap directly
oh i forgot to ask do i need to know color of the wires?
|
Re: LED bulbs that will swap directly
For the front turn signals, you'll need to identify the parking light wire, so you know which wire needs not to be connected to the resistor. It would be great to find out the color beforehand, but I don't know it.

Re: LED bulbs that will swap directly
There was a post in some other thread that had a link to a LED-ready relay. All you had to do was replace the stock relay with it.
