alternator questions

How many amps does the stock alternator put out? I'm planning on having an alternator rebuilt and upgraded to put out more amps to help deal with my fairily large stereo. What would be a good number of amps to have it built to be putting out? The only reason I'm thinking about doing this is that the lights on my Alpine head unit dim a little when my subs hit hard sometimes and because I was told it is a good idea to upgrade the alternator. Any better ideas?

Stock is 95. I have a 110A I got from Napa.

Make sure your crank pulley is OEM size as a smaller one will compromise voltage levels at idle, especially with a high output alt and stereo.

110-115 is probably good if you're just getting some headlight dimmage.

Any further info on the 110 amp one? I'd like to replace my ailing one with something a little more substantial than stock if I can.

It would appear that you are experiencing “a little” voltage drop and only “sometimes”.

In itself this does not represent any sort of problem. The only problem could be that you are unhappy with the degree of thump that you hear. :D
If so, your first option is to add a capacitor at the voltage supply input to your amp. ;)

I installed a Rockford Fosgate digital capacitor awhile ago which helped, but my head unit still dims every once in awhile. So I figured I would take the next step. I was informed that would either be an upgraded alternator or another battery in the trunk.

You must be a fan of a lot of thump, bump, clunk from close to the trunk.

The battery upgrade is probably cheaper ... although including the wire to the front of the car ???
might be the same $ as the 110amp alternator. :)

I'd go for the Alternator ;)
