5MT vs 4.44 AT

Does a later model WRX 5spd (which I believe is a 3.545) accelerate as hard as a 4.44AT? I've heard the 4.44 puts as much as 20% more torque to the wheels (though I haven't seen that claim substantiated); will the 3.545 5MT do the same?

Do the math and work it out yourself... YOu've got the right idea, now just find out the gear ratios for each transmission so you can figure out max speed in each gear and max torque to the wheels, etc... Then you'll have a rough estimate as to whether or not they are the same...

If I had to guess though I'd think that the 4.44 Auto would be alittle faster than the WRX 5MT... Just my thoughts though..

Chris,
You've got to toss in the inefficiencies inherent to the AT's design. I'll agree that the AT should be more "consistent" that the MT. You've also got to factor in the fact that the MT is ~75# lighter (I think).

5mt will get you through the 1/4 faster than any AT unless you get a built one from LAN...

Yeah, the weight difference would definitely make me think twice about saying that the Auto would be faster, but then again it is pretty tough to get a good launch in the 5MT (without being too agressive or being too light)... THe Auto you'd just nail the gas and that's it. Assuming that the Auto shifts strong and fast, I could easily see an auto 4.44 being just as fast if not alittle faster than a WRX 5MT (w/ 3.545 final)...

Then again, I haven't ever ridden in a 4.44 Auto, and I am pretty gentle on my tranny, always have been, so I could promise you that if a 4.44 Auto were "racing" me then he'd beat me...

Uh oh! This sounds like a possible showdown, possibly between two people on this board. Who's up for the challenge? Fight, fight, fight! :D

As far as the 1/4 mile is concerned, ask someone who has driven both for their impression. I know I have not read of any autotrannys being quicker or faster than a 5MT in the 1/4 mile, on this site.

I think it's about 100 pounds lighter...

Tim, you're soon to be 5spd . . . what are you doing with your 4.44s?:D

If you are doing the swap, you should lay down a few runs in the 1/4 with the 4.44 and then with the 5spd so we can see the difference. Wait, has someone done that already? <runstothesearchfeature>

The WRX 5MT is actually a 3.9 to 1 axle ratio. Although the rear differential is the same, the drive shaft to the rear is a 1.1 to 1 underdrive. The front differential is 3.9 to 1.

Damn, it's been so long since I talked about the tranny I totally forgot about this... You're right, the WRX final is 3.90... I'd really like to ride in an Auto 4.44 to see what that's like... Anyone with 4.44's near Raleigh?? :)
