How long does it take

How long to put in a timing belt and change the water pump. How long to take the cover off? How long to ****up the timing belt cover?

Beav, what are the shop times on all but the last one up there?? And, Why would the dealer ship quote me 600.00+ to change sparkplugs? (my guess is they didn't know how!)

Labor . SkillLevel . Warr. . Std.

Timing Belt . . Replace . B . 1.8 . 2.5

. . Includes: R&R Outer Timing Belt Cover.

. . Note . . . With A/C Add . B . 0.0 . 0.4

Labor . SkillLevel . Warr. . Std.

Water Pump . Replace . B 2.7 3.8

. . Includes: R&R Timing Belt Cover On Loyale & XTcoupe Models. Includes: R&R Timing Belt On Impreza & SVX Models

Take this to mean that the water pump labor would do both jobs - just add the price of the parts.

Labor . SkillLevel . Warr. . Std.

Spark Plug . Replace One . B 0.6 . 0.9

. . . Includes: R&R Air Cleaner Housing & Battery On SVX Models Only.

Double platinum plugs are pricey - if that's what they're quoting, figure about $12-$15 each.

they say it cost so much because.....

they basically have to disassemble the top of the motor to get to the plugs.

svx_commuter 08-07-2002 01:22 PM

It isn't the top of the motor it is the sides. Everything on the sides of the valve covers has to come out.

It will cost you more in parts if the timing belt cover is rubbing or if the last time it was changed someone over tightened the bolts and some plastic breaks while taking out the bolts.:( the gasket may be bad also.

You may want to do the cam and crank seal while you are inthere.

How many miles you got? 120K + then do the seals.

Is your water pump leaking?

Battery, airbox, and the plug coils. That's all there is.

i remember when i had my 60,000 mile service.

it was like $700. i dont know what the hell they were doing but it was pricey. definitely get your cam and crank shaft seals replaced. when those go oil gets everywhere.

The next day i got my svx i had it serviced at the dealer.. it had 125k and it needed the 120k tuneup. $1300 for the 120k service + an other hefty amount for seals/bering/tranny cooler, etc..

yes, ouch.. But its all good now!

(exept for that little noice from driveshat or u joints)

The spark plugs are a cake job. If I remember right I took the airbox out but not the battery. I do know it was like a 30 minute job for me - but I've been doing this for a couple days now.... ;)

Some of this stuff is overvalued by the book, but it helps out when something bites the mechanic in the butt, like rusty cars with bolts that break, stuff that someone else has fiddled with, etc., etc., etc.

If you've got a few tools and aren't prone to breaking things I'd give it a go if I were you. Pockets had the right attitude when he said he'd try it and wouldn't be embarrased to have it towed in if it didn't work out for him. Ends up he did a great job and saved a few pennies to boot.

coupons...

Mitch,

If you have ever dealt with Santa Cruz Subaru, they send out coupons all the time. I have currently have a coupon for timing belt replacement for $230. Not too bad I think. They say their regular price is $250. Let me know if you want the coupon.

Cheers,
Matt
