New Head Unit Install Antenna question!

Fianlly got time to install Pioneer AVH-P4200DVD and have one question left.....the old head unit has 2 antenna leads coming out, 2 hookups by driver's right knee.

New head unit has only one antenna lead coming out.

Do I need an adaptor?

To make things more interesting, I have a separate HD Radio module, GEX-P20HD to hook up inline.

Anyone worked through this kind of install?

One antenna is the antenna mast, the other is the rear window defrost lines- just hook the new head unit up to the mast one.

I forget if you want to use the male or female one. But use whichever has the right end to plug into your HU, that is the one that goes to the mast. Depending on the HU, you may need an extension, any decent stereo shop should have one.

If you want to use the glass antenna as well, there is an adapter made that will tie both antenna's into one, but the adapter will probably be harder to find.

Thanks for the info, guys! Got the unit all hooked up and checked out DVD, HD, IPod link all the other stuff. I'm going to put in the Bluetooth module later.

I cannot beleive all the wires shoehorned behind the new unit!

The only cosmetic issue is that the gray trim piece inside the slide-down door can't be reinstalled or the flip-up screen will hit it.

IIRC the defroster antenna is for am reception.

Re: New Head Unit Install Antenna question!

Nope, the extra antenna is for something called "diversity". The stock headunit can switch between the two antennae depending which has better reception at the moment. Because of when like you pull up to a stop light and the reception from the mast gets all crappy and then you move a few feet up and it's ok again.

You can melt or cut a hole in the little black piece for the inside of the cover door if there's just like one knob or something blocking it from closing. If it's the whole thing out a bit too far then yea, you'll have to leave it off.

Hi Dave, My local car radio guy tells me that some after market radios put the HD module in a place that then runs the HD signal through the analog circuit. He says, so whats the point. On most HD radios it takes up to about five seconds for the bit stream to load up the digital to analog converter so you have sound. Take care, BOBB
