how does one get into racing circuits?

before i reached double digits i always wanted to rally race... living in minnesota doesnt help that much but i've always wondered what steps people take to become a rally racer.... also, lately drifting has looked interesting... where do i find driving classes for that sort of thing? i remember when i had my quattro i was invited to an ice race... but that thing wasnt even close to ready. any input is appreciated, and probably most of you think i'm retarded...

Don't try drifting with the SVX. You need RWD, and RWD only.

Try looking into HPDE. They're more like road racing. I would personally recommend getting some autocross time first, though. Less danger to your vehicle.

oh, i know, i was thinking nissan for drifting... maybe 300zx? if i got a bunch of money over this next summer... but i'm probably just dreaming

Check out these guys, they run a road-race type thing, and they also do drifting sometimes in the Twin cities area:

They run several events in the non-snowcovered season

Another good place to check is:
http://www.mnsportcompacts.net

You can probably find news of racing events there. They have meets and stuff too.

Or also look if there is a Porsche Club of America that has track time near you. That's what I participate in down here and it's a blast.

240SX is the most common drift car for a reason.. Perfect balance... 300ZX is doable, but the balance isn't perfect, and it's heavier. It'll probably be more fun, though.

www.scca.org is a good start! Honestly you're better off starting with autoxing as its cheaper to get into and then build if you find you're committed. As for drifting go by a rwd beater to learn on instead of killing a pricier car.

Amen. I've owned a '90 300ZX TT and my wife (girlfriend at the time) owned a '89 240SX. While it was super easy for me to break traction in the Z, the 240SX was much easier to modulate once traction was broken.

Another benefit of the 240SX is that they're cheap. You can pick up a decent early 90's model for around $1,000-$2,000 - and the aftermarket is HUGE!!!!!

the best way is to challenge me to a race, preferably in a school zone.

then we'll post the results on here. :D

You need to compete locally, and win. Then you will get noticed.

It seems prices for 240s have gone up recently, with the drifting scene going mainstream.

If you want to get into rally I'd suggest a couple things:
First SCCA rally cross. Its like autocross, only in mud. This will teach you car control on loose surfaces better than any other cheap sanctioned racing event.

NASA is also another good place to look for rally stuff, as SCCA has dropped "real" rally as we know it from WRC and the like.

I'd also suggest checking out Special Stage, as they picked up a lot of the cars that SCCA dropped.

Another thing to remember is the common rally rule of thumb. In rally, there are those who have rolled, and those who are about to.

Depends on what you call going up. If you mean $500 sure. But you can still find a decent hardtop 91-93 for ~$2000. :)

Once an owner puts in an SR20DET swap, then the price jumps up by another 4-6 grand!
