Ice Racing
Anyone ever thought about it or know anything about it?
I was reading up on it and it seems like there are a few outfits around that have a strict no-contact policy. The risk is still there, but much less chance of a wreck. I think this would be a fun and cheap way to improve driving skills.:) I'm uber-serious about doing this, so if you have any input, let me know. |
just make sure that the ice is thick enough!
you don't want to be one of the owned! Kelli |
No, definitely don't want to be pwn3d...:D ;)

it really does sound like a blast! i know i've slid on the roads enough, i should be a pro...i almost killed me and a passager in my svx...going around a sharp turn...it was like 40 degrees out...didn't expect there to be black ice....and almost lost control. i was also doing like 5-10 under the speed limit of 50. i will never forget that night. my passager is an svx owner and even he said, i can't believe you were able to stick that! i was sliding for like 3-4 minutes total at about 40mph!
i was scared ****less! Kelli |
One of our techs has been ice racing for 20 + years. He recently "retired" from it, but he loved it very much and won many trophies over the years. In his ice racing circuit, you couldn't have 4WD, turbo, or any more than 4 cylinders. He used to race old Loyale sedans, then I think he moved up to Impreza coupes. Good times:)

race a honda...just make sure you buy tiny jackets for your gerbils!

As a young man I ice raced my old SAAB (1967) in Connecticut .
It was a blast. You need fully studded snow tires and a light weight car like an old Miata, not an SVX. |

They actually have studless classes now. I am having trouble finding a league with no contact rules in the midwest. MIRA (michigan ice racing assoc.) looks to be very organized. They actually did an article on MIRA and cheap ice racing in motor trend about a year back. Larry, what league did you race with? Was it pro or am? Any suggestions for a newbie like me? |
that would be really.. really sweet... I'd love to do something like that... maybe with teh gsx... eventually.. heh.. man would that be fun.

Kelli's back?

Kelli never left :p

Strictly amature. The 1967 SAAB was my "drive-to-the-race-change-tires-race-change tires-drive-home" car.
It was not as organized as Michigan because we did not get as cold in NY and Conn. We ran more on ice than on snow and used haybales. Good Luck. It was a blast, especially spinning out. |

I really have wanted to start doing this for fun, but i cant find any organization around the northwest either. There all on the east cost, and alot of those organizations have a weight limit of 3200 pounds :(.
