The Blob was born at Chernobyl

Born is probably the wrong word. Anyhow:

Headline "Major biological discovery inside the Chernobyl reactor, a fungus that feeds on radiation"

Quote:

This slime, a collection of several fungi actually, was more than just surviving in a radioactive environment, it was actually using gamma radiation as a food source. The fungi appear to use melanin, a chemical found in human skin as well, in the same fashion as plants use chlorophyll. Casadevall and his co-researchers then set about performing a variety of tests using several different fungi. Two types - one that was induced to make melanin (Crytococcus neoformans) and another that naturally contains it (Wangiella dermatitidis) - were exposed to levels of ionizing radiation approximately 500 times higher than background levels. Both of these melanin-containing species grew significantly faster than when exposed to standard background radiation. That is to say, the melanin molecule gets struck by a gamma ray and its chemistry is altered. This is an amazing discovery, no one had even suspected that something like this was possible.

"Just as the pigment chlorophyll converts sunlight into chemical energy that allows green plants to live and grow, our research suggests that melanin can use a different portion of the electromagnetic spectrum - ionizing radiation - to benefit the fungi containing it," said co-researcher Ekaterina Dadachova. Interestingly, the melanin in fungi is no different chemically from the melanin in our skin, leading Casadevall to speculate that melanin could be providing energy to skin cells.

Wow.

Also, there's this;

Rock-Eating Slime
Quote:

These bacteria live completely independently of all products of the sunlit world, including oxygen; they apparently subsist on rocks and water alone. As a result they may tell us something about how organisms survived on Earth billions of years ago, before they learned how to make food through photosynthesis.

Intriguing.

So if we get in a nuclear slug fest with china and or russia the aftermath will now be even worse.

Great.......:(

Let's just hope Hillary isn't presidentess:eek:

Isn't Hillary anti [violent] video games or summat? I'm not votin' for her.

Gelatinous radioactive fungi or not.

Steve McQueen would have enjoyed that bit of news.

Always looking on the brighter side.... If we can cook and eat most mushrooms (fungi), can we do the same with the new radioactive fungi. I have to come up with a winning recipe.

Ron, what wine do you serve with radioactive fungi?
Does it have a faint green glow in dim candlelight (how romantic)?

So...radiation helps make melonin containing fungus grow...hmm..being our skin contains melonin...hmm..I can make some money off this.

I know! I'll just move to chernobyl...as my skin grows alot, Ill cut it off and sell it to burn victims. MWahahahah!!!Ill be a multi-thousandair before yoyu all know it!!!

Yeah and she also wants to take everyone's guns away. Fork that. She can pry mine out of my cold dead fingers.
