Just got a set of 4 piston calipers and cross-drilled rotors!!!
 

...for my bike. I think its funny that my bike has a more complicated caliper then my car. Havent tested them out yet but they're supposed to be pretty nice. Anyone in colorado/boulder go bikin' a lot?

Its a salsa ala carte, reynolds 853 steel frame. Still in the process of building it up. Gonna take some pictures of it when i'm done draining my bank account.

I haven't taken the disc brake plunge yet. Changing anything on my bike will result in replacing all kinds of parts, so for now it's all staying. I don't like current components - derailleurs, shifters, forks... Forks have gotten heavier, weaker and perform no better than my Mag 21. Shifters are less consistent. Derailleurs have gotten less durable, less consistent...

I have photos of my Homegrown in my locker. I love that frame...

Yeah, its really not cost effective to switch to disc, getting new hubs, relacing the spokes and a disc brake set can get pretty pricey. If you're payin retail it can be more then a whole bike!

As far as I'm concerned, Schwinn is dead. But my Homegrown is the last model year they built. I always wanted one in Bass Boat Blue, but they actually made several improvements since that color was available. The paint is really the only let down on the frame - not the color, but the quality. My old frame, an s[9five].2, was far heavier and not as good, but the paint was striking. 'Kiss The Sky Blue.' Pretty...I'm probably going to hang it on the wall in my office when we move to the new building.

I can get stuff for close to cost, but I'm just not impressed with the quality or durability of Deore-level components these days. So I'll only put new stuff on when I can afford to get top-quality parts. Mavic wheels, the best Rock Shox fork I can buy and XTR everything...yeah... :D

Some of the modern LX and XT components are pretty similar to the old XT and XTR stuff...in some cases items such as cranksets are better. A new LX crankset is stronger and lighter than my older XT unit. The 4-piston XT discs are some italian design that shimano bought the rights to if i'm not mistaken. Items vary so much from component to component.

Anyway, here's the bike, stayed up till 5 in the morning today adjusting everything and setting up the brakes. Rode if today for the first time, 2 laps around betasso preserve. SOOO nice, steel has a really comfortable ride and disc brakes are smooth, modular and stop on a dime! All i need now is a new headset and shes 100% done.

Yeah, I know the cranks are better. But I've had so much experience with friends' bikes just falling apart on the trails that I'm wary of curent components.

5AM...I did the same thing the night I built up the Homegrown. I said, 'this won't take me longer than 3-4 hours.'

At 4AM I was done with the major adjustments... That day at work I could barely stay awake in my seat, but I was going riding, man!
