EMERGENCY Car will not start please help

Sorry for wrong forum. Car won't start at all. Starter is making no noise at all; not even attempting to crank engine. Battery / everything else fine. What do I do?

mattski 11-12-2002 11:50 AM

Clean battery terminals and cable connection. Turn on headlights and attempt to start engine. If starter does not crank but headlights dim, that would suggest a current draw from the starter and a bad starter.

car won't start

1. Check the connections like Mattski said.
2. Check your fuses and make sure your in park all the way!!!
3. Check the headlights. If they are on that narrows it down to a none battery thing (unless its just week).
4. Turn the car over (do your lights dim). They should if power is going to the starter.
5. You can try hotwiring the starter from the battery. Take a neg and positive (really all you need is the positive from the battery to the pos connection on the starter). Make sure the car is in the on position and make the connection. If the starter works its prob your starter solinoid. If not then I'm not much more help at this point.

I think there's a how to do this somewhere on the net. I'd look but took too long of a lunch and have too much crap to do. Do a Legacy Starter troubleshooting or legacy starter solenoid search on yahoo. It should show up there. Oh yeah another thing is that it could be your ignition. Try jiggling the key a few times and keep trying to restart it and see what happens. Sorry its kinda a quick response. Good luck:D

If the headlights don't dim (or any lights for that matter - watch the dome lite if it's handier) try to start the car in neutral instead of park.

How old is your battery? You say it's 'fine,' but I'm going to guess that it's your problem. When the battery in my SVX went bad, I figured it was something major - the headlights, the radio and even the power seat worked, but it wouldn't turn over.

I had the same problem on my 92. It was the stretched cable on the gear selector, which along with the brake pedal, was part of the starter interlock.

Once when my car was in park, the engine/starter did not get any power, though everything else worked. The tech pushed the gear selector forward just a little bit and it made contact and all was fine. Put in in park and push the gear selector as far forward as you can and see if it works. My tech says this was a lot less expensive alternative to pulling the console to make corrections

that's why i added a voltmeter gauge. easy to keep an eye on what's going on. hope you solve the problem (and its something simple!)

Problem Solved

Thanks for the lightning fast responses! I went back outside after my posts and tried putting it in Neutral; started just fine! Whew. Yeah I guess the gear selector thing is messed up, usually doesn't shift out of park without the Shift lock button pressed. Thanks for the help :)
