Trunk Struts

My trunk lid stays up with absolutely no problem. It just seems extremely heavey to lift when opening. Is this normal or do I need to replace the struts? Thanks.

If your trunk stays up, then the struts are probably ok. If it was closing all of the time, I would say you should replace them. :)

I would say that they are about half worn out. I have seen trunk lids that don't slam when you close them and are fairly easy to open even with the spoiler. Removing the spoiler makes a huge difference with opening/closing the trunk.

So is it just the weight of the spoiler that makes it so heavy to life? No problem staying up or closing.

Little bit of column A, little bit of column B

Mine is heavy to lift and I close it by dropping it from only about 2 inches up. Once it's open it easily stays open.

My hood on the other hand can be questionable but I have yet to "pull a Rufus".

The spoiler weighs almost nothing - I would guess about 2 lbs. I think it has to do with how far out it is mounted making that weight have more of an effect. The trunklid on my wifes svx would stay open at any position until we installed a spoiler. Now it is a guillotine unless fully open.

Mine was like your's from new: heavy to lift but stayed up. I replaced the struts last year and the trunk opens much easier and seems lighter now. If you want it lighter, change the struts. It will help. Bill Z

I heard that the 92 and 93 struts were different from the 94-97 ones. The later ones were stronger, because the earlier ones were designed without the spoiler mounted. Seems to be the one area the engineers overlooked...well, that and the wheel bearings and tranny.
