Engine goes Squeak Squeak
I attempted to change my drive belts today in order to fix a squeak that I have been having. Two hours and a fried belt (my fault...blame stupidity) later I have a new A/C belt and the old ps belt. My dad came to observe my squeak and said he thinks it might be bearings going on a pulley.
Symptoms: Low+High pitched squeak (kind of alternates) Usually stops when I accelerate Almost always stops when A/C is turned on Always squeaks when idling Difficult to locate the source Belt dressing doesn't seem to help Tightening the ps belt only seems to change the pitch of the sound The A/C belt had about 15k on it but I just replaced the ps belt about 3k ago and it has no visible signs of wear. The new A/C belt is OEM but the ps is NAPA. Anyone have any ideas on what it could be? Any way to test to see if it is belt vs bearing? |
It could be the tensioner pulleys, or ac clutch bearing.

Fixed?
Took off the ps belt, ran for 5 mins, no squeaks. Cleaned off the pulleys, put belt back on, ran for 5 mins, still no squeaks. Weird...

I had the very same problem with my mustang. Only at idle it would squeak (almost sounded like a big supercharger). While it was squeaking, I just took some turbine oil and put a couple dropes on each of them one at a time. Turns out that it was the bearing going bad in the water pump. Maybe this will work for you?
Maybe you have already solved it! Anyway good luck! |
AHHHH!
It's back again. Drove to work and once I stopped it started to squeak again. I am going to have a mechanic take a quick look at it tomorrow to see if he can figure it out. Hopefully its not the pump, I don't really have the time to dissassemble half the engine right now.

Mechanic
Took it to the mechanic today. He said he couldn't tell exactly what it was but he said that it was not the belt or the pulley. He said it is most likely a vacuum/leak somewhere in the engine near the throttle bodies, and that it was not a problem to worry about.

This wouldn't be the crank pulley separating now would it? I've never had it happen to me so I don't know the symptoms.

Oh Dave this is really getting freaky, you digging up old posts. I was reading this thinking....Oh no Steve has the problem AGAIN??? Then I saw the dates.:) We had a Warren county meet about 2 months ago and identified the squeek as the water pump. It was really loud from under the car. It most certainly sounded just like a mouse. :D Since then, Steve, the BurgundyBeast has changed the water pump and the squeek is gone. The used water pump also made the noise when turned by hand after it was out of the pump.
Closure  What closure  |
Haha, yeah the problem is fixed as John said :D It was in fact the water pump even though the mechanic specifically told me it wasn't. That is why I try to avoid mechanics...

Re: Engine goes Squeak Squeak
Same problem on my 1994 SVX LSI. Both exterior belts removed still squeaks. Suspect water pump but having difficulty removing camshaft pulley, engine turns. Is it a normal counter clockwise remove thread?
I understand there is a hole to place a screwdriver into somewhere near the throttle body? Can someone be more specific to its location? Mike |
Re: Engine goes Squeak Squeak
hi many things go squeak behind the covers ,a water pump can ,but you can put a screw driver up to it from under the car and listen to it,as for loosening the crank pully you can hold it by the torque converter access ,but i break them free with the starter with a large 1/2 drive ratchet ,and i own the tools to tighten it ,but you can hold it what ever way works for you
