Repaint trunk / boot lid

We call them boots down under. I think the American's call them trunks.
Either way, I'm talking about the lid for the trunk or boot.

My car was completely repainted 2 months ago.

The boot lid has never been right. It looks like a fine spray of oil or silicone has wafted over it just prior to painting. The painter (who has no staff) is certain that's not the cause, but can't explain it.
He's guessing that something is seeping out of the material the lid is made of and ruining the paint.

Anyway, he's going to strip it back and paint it again.

But I promised I would do some research first.

It seems the boot lid is made of plastic or fibreglass.

Has anyone here repainted a boot lid ?
Any tips / advice ?
Does anyone know just what the boot lid is made of ?

Thanks

Re: Repaint trunk / boot lid

Shane,

will check out my TSM for the car - there is a whole section on touching-up & repainting the boot area - right down to what primer you should use.....I do not have a scanner at the moment, but others should be able to tell you the book/section/page numbers today, otherwise wait till I get back to work next monday in order that I get hold of a scanner.

Re: Repaint trunk / boot lid

The entire boot/trunk lid is in fact fiberglass and needs to be prepped differently.

.

HERE is the repair manual for the trunk. See pages 80-90 for everything you need to know.

Also in here is the procedure for removing the boot, starting on page 78. Just before the repair section.

Re: Repaint trunk / boot lid

In short the standard mode for painting fiberglass (or at least how my car's painter explained it to me who worked for a boat manufacturer for 20 years is to remove all the paint and primer then prep and prime and paint. He did it on my TiV and it came out fabulous and has not had an issue in the 3 years since getting it done. On a side note having "lightened an SVX boot lid I can assure you that it is a very strange material in that it lacks much of the fiber which gives fiberglass its name and also its strength. Try grinding one, if you don't believe me.:D
