Speedometer bounces below 50mph
So my 97' just started having the speedometer bounce around at speeds below 50mph. Once above 50 it works fine. Any ideas?

Re: Speedometer bounces below 50mph
So I hooked up my OBDII reader to the car and selected live data while driving and the speed fluctuated all over below 40 mph. I already pulled the speed sensor and it was clean and intact. The instrument cluster matched the speed the code reader was displaying so I'm guessing it's the gear down inside the transmission. Has anyone ever replaced this before?

Re: Speedometer bounces below 50mph
Apparently it's a very big job to change it. As in drop the transmission big. When the gear fails it's usually because they've broken and you get no reading at all. I would suspect the speed sensor is at fault. Try to find a used one online or in a junk yard.

Re: Speedometer bounces below 50mph
go with the sensor they were never very reliable and do the easy job first ,beside the gear is either going to work or not at all ,and you have to remove the trans ,split the diff off to change the speedo drive gear im sure they are out there I'm sure they are out there and i think i have at least 3 in a box somewhere
