Which tranny is it?

I have an associate that has installed two used transmissions into an SVX. The first trans was junk and the second is shuddering/vibrating very badly. His question is how do you know the difference between a SVX and a Legacy, et al, transmission? He's thinking that the difference in the final drive ratios could be the problem, but before he goes to shoot his supplier he'd like to know if this is the cause of the problem.

Beav, that is exactly the difference (final drive ratio). That was the only way my rebuilder found that the first tranny I had rebuilt was a Legacy trans. He actually had to "count teeth." Otherwise, they "look" the same.

Didn't they have a missmatch with the wiring to the box, ? that may be a clue to the difference. Pull the extension housing and count the plates in the transfer clutch. 4 for Legacy, 6 for SVX.

Thanx for the responses, I'll fwd it on to him. I'm sure he would have like hearing that there was something on the exterior signalling which tranny or the ratio, but such is life. ;) All I can say is I'm glad it's not my problem... *cheesy grin*
